Transit Mk5 V6 conversion - exhaust problem

Postby TransitTony » Thu Jul 21, 2005 12:50 pm

Hi all...just joined, seems like a good idea!! I have a Tranny HiCube which I am converting into a camper - complete with V6 power and LPG running costs. The main problem I have is with the drivers side exhaust manifold - the oil filter and bellhousing get in the way....! Has anyone done this conversion before...and how did you get round this problem..? I don't think Ford make the right part for it....maybe someone can make it for me..? I know Ford made Ambulances with the 2.9EFI but I can't seem to find one to see how they overcame the problem.. Any help or advice would be gratefully received. Thanks!! Tony

Thanks for your quick reply, Mark.....I will try the Ford dealers but its not the pipes that're causing the grief...I reckon with the right manifold I could fabricate the pipes to fit. The standard cast manifold on the driver's side sits too close to the steering column as well, so I was hoping that someone could maybe make a steel manifold....? Anyway, I will see what the dealers say....and of course I'll let you know....Cheers Tony :)

sorry...forgot to say...I think it's a car engine. Long story cut short, I bought a 92 Tranny with the engine and lpg kit already fitted, thinking a simple job to swap engines with my HiCube. Wrong!! Whoever fitted the engine must have had the same problem because he used the original manifold, but fitted upside down!!! He then used about 4 feet of flexible pipe to come up and then over and then down the back of the engine....!
Very dangerous...and an absolute eyesore...! I want to do the job properly! Cheers again....Tony

here is another way round it! costly but might work! contact petevanlee and ask him to give you the vin number of his 2.9inj and then you will hopefully be able to get some joy with fords ! :D or he might be able to photo the manifold for you ,and then you can see the difrence! :D

I have just sold a 2.9i transit ambulance, I can only say I think there must be a specific manifold for this aplication, as the one on mine had plenty of clearance, the downpipe goes over to the side away from the bellhousing. they are most probably block huggers, the easiest thing to do is to try and get hold of a scrap ambulance. dont expect it to be that quick when the V6 is in unless you change the diff ratio. mine was great on the hills but it revved out at about 88mph when the rev limiter cut in, there is enough power to pull much taller gearing than the standard diff plus it wont be screaming at only 70mph, better mpg too, mine got about 22-24mpg on a run. This is what i was planning but I sold it instead. now, a 2.9 in a SWB transit 80 sounds appealing...

if you are talking about your ambulance revving out at 88mph thats not the rev limit its the speed governer they were made to do that as a motor that size and weight dooing 100mph would be abit tricky! i had a 2.9 twin wheel van and that stopped at 89mph!

not to sure if it helps.but the 2.9efi engine in a tranny may have a remote oil filter????if so that is what you may have to do to get the clearance you need??see if you can get steel manifolds made to fit van with the downpipes if you get no joy at a breakers.

My 2.9 didnt have a remote filter. it looks like ford must have done quite a bit to get this motor in the tranny, with diferent manifolds, airbox etc
