Different options

Postby Wolfie » Fri Aug 19, 2005 6:48 pm

got a mark1 and notice there is loads of different options for the rear axle ratios, engines, etc.

I have the V4 engine high compression one?? swb camper with a ratio of 5.143:1 does this seem right and what sort of figures should i be looking at for mpg, top speed etc??

Over to you, madmark. He's good with ratios, ask him!

ratio's

Postby john leeman » Fri Aug 19, 2005 11:03 pm

all transit mk1s have low compresssion engines fitted from new, they last longer and have more low down pulling power, as for ratios 5.14 is a mid range ratio for towing. i would have thought a 4.63 to 1 woul have suited a camper van better, giving a good speed with economy too.ratios are worked out, eg 4.63 to 1 is 4.63 turns of the propshaft to 1 turn of the road wheel.

high compression was an option according to my handbook and according to the figures i have on the plate and the writings in the handbook mine is def a high compresion jobbie. with 79bhp nett also has 123lb.ft of torque according to the handbook.

Low compression is supposed to be 74.5bhp and 114lb.ft

am getting 22mpg around town and 24.8mpg on a long run, top speed was 75mph just, checked against my gps.

so if a put a 4.63-4.44 axle on then i would get better mpg and top speed but then use some of the towing abilty??

mate you are dooing well with a 75mph top speed with a 5.14 thats abit high reving ,with a hc engine 4.1 would be much better if its a short wheel base camper! and would give you a nice 65 mph on the motorway! :D
