whinning from back end

Postby michael » Mon Aug 22, 2005 10:33 pm

Sounds like it could be comming from the rear axle of my mk3 '92 120d swb. Any ideas what it could be, what checks i can do to determine the problem and possible repair costs. I've read the other post in this section of the forum but could do with somemore advice. Thanks in advance.

rear axle noise

Postby john leeman » Wed Aug 24, 2005 2:39 pm

some swb rear axles do whine after a high milage, check for back lash from the prop to diff flange, ie turn the prop with your hand, with hand brake on. if the movement is quite a lot, the diff maybe worn out, you could put some wynn's diff oil additve, may have been run with low oil level in diff ?. the other thing it could be is propshaft centre bearing, get a friend to sit in the back and listen to the floor to determin where the noise is coming from. good luck.

That's useful info, got the same problem with my K reg SWB diesel - slack drivetrain and a whine that appears about 55 mph and increases until it sounds like a pack of tired children in a supermarket i.e. bloody unbearable from 65 mph onwards. Anybody know a good source of s/h diffs / axles? Think I read somewhere that you've gotta have special kit to change the diff on its own - is that true?

Cheers mate.will check it out.My problem doesn't sound as bad as 'daithevan's'. Is it an expensive problem to sort out?
