dodgy wipers

Postby finnon » Thu Aug 25, 2005 5:53 pm

Hi guys i own a smiley 2.5 diesel tranny work horse  but it has an anoyin fault where the wipers only work properly on maximum speed they will sometimes work on slow and very rarely the intermitent works. ive been told to clean the motor out by a friend but what do you guys think it could be first incase i break it :D .

Also my break warning light never comes on when the handbrake is applied is this normal? earlier on i removed the multiplug from the reservoir but the light didnt come on then either but it does flicker briefly on startup.

one last thing the indicator self cancel is busted are these a ford only item? as ive been quoted £50 odd which is a bit pricey for a daft little switch

cheers guys

Hello mate. try your local breakers yard or do a google search on commercal vehicle dismantlers for a new indicator stalk mate. Will be a lot cheaper. You might as well get the wiper one aswell for the sake of a few quid and if it doesn't work still you can at least rule it out.

What year is it? On the Mk2 there is a little plastic collar inside the steering column, which usually breaks. Don't know if it's the same for the Mk3. I have never known my break warning light come on with the hand break (Mk3 thing?). Can't help with the wipers. Welocme, by the way.

mk3 if indicators dont cancel its the stalk usualy dont have seperate thing like mk2..
do you mean the warning light for the hand brake or for the brake resorvior the handbrake light should come on when handbrake in on
resorvoir one should come on when the starter motor is turning and go off when the engine start on most mk3(always some that didnt).
smileys are mk4 so are probably the same.but have differnt switches.

cheers guys yeah ive seen a lot of smiley transits with broke indicator stalks. supose ill give a scrappys a go for both stalks incase the wiper ones knackered aswell. Its strange for the brake warning light tho, surely it should come on if the multi plug is removed though it would register as a drop in fluid wouldnt it?

cheers

i think you need to short 2 of the wires together to make the light come on - as the float drops it makes the switch!

hi jay

i didnt realise there was 2 seperate lights, i can only see the one with the pic of a brake and a ! in the midle (i think anyways it only lights very briefly whereas in my supra it stays on for a couple of seconds and in my sierra its also the handbrake warning light aswell.

my last transit didnt have any of these stupid faults dont know why they seem so common on the facelift smiley ones. unless its just poorer quality components ford used

that light you have should light up briefly as a light check.may not have 2 lights just the 1 like in sierra.but the sensor on top of brake servo should make the light come on when press .switch on brake resovoir is probably faulty..
