Mad? 1.8td to to replace pinto 2ltr into Transit motorhome

Postby Nel5on » Thu Sep 08, 2005 8:40 pm

Silly???
I been looking into replacing the thirsty petrol engine. Everybody is thinking 2.5 banana engine. I've got a 2ltr (eco carb) pinto with a type 9 box.
I'm just thinking a 1.8td serria engine would be an easy transplant, already set up to drop straight in. Power seem ok too.
My Pinto with eco carb is about 50-60hp
1.8td is about 78ps or intercooled at 82ps
Numbers stack up, weekend transplant sounds good too.
Easy to get low mileage serria(try getting a low mileage diesel transit)
Serria will fit in garage, easy to pull apart too(transit wont fit in garage)

Whats everybodys thoughts...Am I crazy????

Thanks

well all the little ducatos are 1.9td's only the lwb's are 2.5d!! so why not?
is yours a swb?
i couldn't see much problems fitting it other than the flywheel size but then again the fit em in P100's and they can take a ton so i'd say go for it!!
interesting idea!!! :D

Mk1 Mondeo's have the same motor too. Parts are no problem
But seria comes with type9 box. Everything is the same, no driveshaft change, no mount changes, no floor cutting.
Anybody looked at this before???

you will need a type 9 transit gear lever - this will bolt strait onto the top of the sierra type 9 box - just remove the sierra lever and fit a blanking plate over the hole!!!

for some reason the diesel uses a type 9 with the longer input shaft like on the V6 boxes so i assume the bell housing is a one of designe?
Me mate has just fitted one 2 a 2.3 cortina :) doesn't recon the gear spacing are as good as a petrol box though :)
Current fleet
Mk7 transit ambulance
Mk1 Mondeo 1.8 STD

Mate i'd go for it i cant se anything that should stop you
a Di fits in a tranny there bigger than the 1.8td so you shouldnt have a problem there!
Are you sure the sierra box is Type 9 not mt75  if not there could be a slight problem there!
mate what mk tranny is yours?
as for the diff - it aint gonna stop it running- it may be an un suitable ratio but it will run just swap it if its necessary once the vans up and running!!

 one thing though the engine mountings arnt gonna be available off the shelf - i dunno how confident you would be with making some or mabe you could get away with an adaplet plate to use the pinto mounts - shouldnt stop you though!!! :D

Mine is a mk2 Transit CI Motorhome (Dont know what wheel base)
Already put in a type 9 in mine, but very noisy in 5th (lasted the 7000mls done in last 3mths ok, eurpoe twice)
Off to halfords to get the specs on the 1.8 td(read haynes manual) just to make sure it will have more power/torque over my Eco 2ltr pinto.

Thanks for your help.

Every think would be easier if i was at home, New Zealand.
I'm only here on a two year permit(No...I paid a 6k bond to get in, have no access to public funds and pay tax,ni and pension with no hope of every seeing it again)
Not much i cant get done in automotive in nz on the cheap and already have good selection of tools(gas, welder and block and tackles.
Thats why i was looking for a bolt in replacement engine, all the tools i buy i have to ship home if i go home, or sell.
So try to keep tools to bare min.
Done a few miles in me motorhome, so much fun, just trying to get better MPG.
Off to halfords to get 1.8td specs now and then pull carbs off me FZR1000 to rejet to get better MPG.
Transit= get to see things and go places with comfy bed and shower
FZR1000= get to go places...Very Fast, but have to sleep rough beside bike.

Thanks Luke.
Your help is great....
Would get you a beer, if we ever caught up.
You seem keen to help other transits back on the road.

Thanks
Nel5on
