Full lock weird noise

Postby Harrypalmer » Wed Dec 31, 2025 10:36 am

Morning chaps

I’m getting a weird noise when steering is on full lock when I rev a little and the noise goes away on full lock.
Here’s what I’ve done so far. I’ve done so far. I’ve changed the steering pump checked all the pulleys cleaned all the belt and pulleys and everything seems to be okay however the noise persists has anybody got any ideas?

Cheers

And your van is what ??? Model , year, engine size, FWD , RWD ,etc
Really you don't want to be holding steering on hard lock as it puts loads of strain on all steering components
Describe the noise?

If you hold it on full lock it will make a noise because the rack is at its full moment and when you apply more revs it will open the pressure relief valve sounds to me all normal and you have spent money you didn’t need to .

I know he’s not posted his vehicle details
But another of his post said he has a 2019 2.0,
They have solid crank pulleys in the custom unless they are a MHEV (hybrid) :)

I mentioned before but I will add it to my signature in future

2019 2.0 Diesel eco trend panther

Thanks all for replies try to answer all questions

When I was underneath and belt off I checked all pulleys and none were seized , all span easily, no grinding or wobbling so I assume they are ok

Noise description: imagine when you are really cold and try to describe it to a little child….and you go brrrrrrrrr and rub your arms on your shoulders.

It’s like that brrrrr noise when your lips flap about. Sorry best I can do.

I agree maybe it’s normal and putting itt on full lock isn’t good.

Wasted money? Perhaps but learnt a lot
Thanks again all

is this on the move or manoeuvring.

not many here been inside a power steering rack to find out what wears out, as most people just replace it.

there are gasket and seal and bush overhaul kits for some (note we are not talking boots or track rods here) .. i know they are available for the mk5 mk6.. i know non are available for connect mk1, seen some once for mk6/7 Availability for m8 .. dont know

EXAMPLE OF MK5
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274628422002?

example of mk6

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/196154083263?

if you could get a kit .. cheap to fix .. if not then whole rack costing a few hundred

all the best.mark

Cheers

I’ve looked underneath and I noticed the tensioner pulley. I checked it and it spins fine and smoothly
When I put the serpentine belt back on and got underneath to watch it all running whilst on idle I noticed that the tensioner pulley does judder back and forth about an inch or 2. When you look at it it’s a blur no should that be not juddering or is that normal as it keeps tension on the belt ?

Cheers

Videos great

My tensioner pulley moves like that judders.

I did check the alternator pulley and it seemed ok.

I can see I will have to make a video

Cheers for the help

If you remove the headlight for access,
Then Either,
Disconnect belt from alternator pulley, and jam the fan blades through front of alternator. The pulley should turn freely by hand in one direction only, lock solid in other direction

Or

Leave belt on,with a screwdriver, you should be able to turn the fan blades through front of alternator.
Again, easily in one direction and not at all in other.
