Aircon again

Postby longhair » Thu Jun 25, 2026 1:53 pm

Just had my Aircon charged again as it wasn't getting cold. Local guy came out checked it for pressure before he charged the system to make sure it okay. Everything was ok so he gassed it up and it was fine but the fan was kicking in and out every few seconds which he said didn't seem right but it was working fine. He stayed for about half an hour just to make sure it was working fine. After he left I went for a quick drive and after a couple of minutes it started blowing warm again, so I came home and gave him a ring and he came straight back. He checked the pressure again and it was still correct, so it must be some sensor or something else, probably connected to the fan kicking in an out quickly. Any suggestions greatly appreciated to what may be at fault before I get a auto electrician in to have a look.

You must start every new thread with the model of transit. year, engine, rwd, fwd ... you're not done this in many posts you've made .. so um! unwise to what you have.

put it in you signature .. then we don't have to ask

When you say "fan", which one are you talking about; the one in the cabin or the one in the engine bay in front of the radiator

Generally at this stage you'd be plugging forscan in and monitoring what is going on

The temperature stat in the evaporator core, what that is reading --- is it faulty causing this issue

When this switching on and off was going on, the tech should have had the gauges hooked up

Should have noted if the compressor was turning on and off with the fan.

Ralays for each fan should be checked out .. often the relays can be swapped with others that are the same and perform some other function and live in the same box.
You also have pressure switches that control things.
This problem could be complex and hard to diagnose from a remote forum

I've worked out it's the high pressure sensor. Thanks anyway.

Keep us posted as to how you fix it please!

Aircon problems can be difficult to diagnose, and fix :)

I certainly will. Looks like you just unscrew it as it has a Schroeder valve so it doesn't lose any pressure. I will try and find a way to test it before I buy a new one. It looks like it is near the accumulator in front of the intercooler so might be a pain in the arse to get to.
By the way it's on my 2014 custom.

Well now the weather has cooled down a bit, I've started trying to find the fault. I have finally found a sensor near the condenser, I don't know if it's the low or high pressure one. It has three wires going into the plug. I don't know which wires to bridge to rule the sensor out. According to what I can find out some sensors have two wires which obviously means it is just a case of bridging the two wires but this I'm not sure about.

It looks like it is the high pressure one as it is on the thinner pipe.

I can't help, about the only thing I've never had a problem with, is the pressure sensors!

The most common problem I've had, is with the compressor.

Right, I have tested the relay and the pressure sensor by jumping the plug and it still doesn't kick in. As far as I understand the system only has one sensor and not two like on the older systems. Rather than being a simple switch, it is a pressure transducer that sends variable voltage to the BCM.
So the next step will be looking for any broken wires and the compressor itself, although I can't see it being that as it was working fine immediately after the regas.

the other sensor is in the evaporator core inside the dash .. temperature sensor that is

i don't know if forscan will read it .. worth a try

if it does the pids will be EVAP, EVAP_TMP, or EVAPORATOR_TEMP

minus -40 means it's failed

May have a pid for commanded and actual .. if so,. they will be the ones to take note of, make more sense

Now then>

I've looked at plenty of fixing vids on this and sometime the evaporator core sensor only available with the core !

ebay
ford transit custom evaporator

from the results (not sure what i'm seeing ) looks like it comes attached to that or is that just the expansion valve ?
catcar.info - no good as i don't know what im looking at really ... cant see a sensor there

don't go buying this .. test it

Note: some customs, ecoblues, have a system on them that has an electric pump at the side of the engine that pumps coolant around the ac heater when in stop start mode, so you get heat even if engine stopped .. if this system is fitted, ive no idea on how it effects the AC system. reports here , some of these pumps have failed in the permanently on mode .. that would screw things up
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

for what its worth .. take note AI can be wrong .. google ai answer to the question:

Does the transit custom have heat sensor in the evaporator core

Yes, the Ford Transit Custom (and the wider Ford Transit family) is equipped with an evaporator Function of the SensorPrevents Freezing: The sensor monitors the temperature of the air leaving the evaporator core .Controls the Compressor: If the temperature drops too close to freezing (which causes the condensation on the core to freeze and block airflow), the sensor signals the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to disengage the AC compressor clutch .Diagnostics: A faulty or erratic sensor can result in the AC failing to turn on, blowing intermittently, or shutting off entirely.

by jumping the plug you may have fooked you fan control module that sits on the fan cowling

No I just bridged the open wire which is 5 volts to signal wire while putting the ground wire to earth Which mimicks the gas at full pressure that lets the compressor kick in.

How the hell are you supposed to get to the connector on the compressor to test it. The bloody thing is on top of the compressor with no access from the top and very limited access from underneath. It blows my mind just how difficult some simple task are perform. I am beginning to hate this van. Everything is hard work.

Don't know, i don't have a custom 2.2 manual

but if you did have the manual .. the only thing these manuals are good at, is the air con system - they go into every tiny detail about it, hopeless content for all other aspects of the vehicle .. but huge detail in the Ac section. all of them are like that, the chap who wrote those sections is the only good chap they had left for the manuals writers department.

Can you get at it by removing the wheel arch liner or the front headlight?

I do have a Haynes manual and in my opinion they are sh*t towards what they used to be, printed on cheap paper with black and white photos that don't show the details like they used to when they were in colour.
The compressor is at the back of the engine block at the side of the chassis leg. I've given up trying to access it. I'm going to get plugged in and see if the fault has hopefully stored a code.
