transit 2.9 conversion

Postby rickroar » Sat Dec 10, 2005 10:22 pm

Hello everyone,

I hope some one can help with this. I am currently converting a 1991 minibus 2.0 pinto and fitting a granada 2.9 efi engine. The query I have relates to gearboxes, the minibus has a mt75 fitted to the pinto engine with a large adapter plate between them, the casing and bellhousing are one piece and the gear lever fits on to the top of the main casing, the adapter plate won't fit the v6 engine without some mods to it. I have a granada mt75 box which fits the v6 perfect but the gear lever is fitted to an extension bracket fitted to the rear of the main casing and above the gearbox tail housing. the granada box has electric speedo and a donut prop mount that slides and the transit box is much shorter, has cable speedo and a bolt on prop type output flange.
How can I make it all fit together? any ideas or suggestions

Thanks Rickroar

I think the gearbox is a mt75, thats what the chap from the ford breakers said when he dropped off the granada.
the casing is alloy and has lots of strengthening webs all over it, it does not have a plate that you can bolt off the top to gets to the internals like on the type9 box. the gearstick bolts on to a small stub coming out of the top of the box via a small casting with three bolts on it

it is a granada V6 mt75 is it? not a DOHC granada one?

re. the speedo cable - apparantly the electric speedo drive unbolts and a manual one will slot in!

Yes both the engine and gearbox are v6 and fit together perfect, its just the lever will end up being behind the front seats if I use the granada v6 mt75 box.
also the adapter plate that goes between the pinto engine and the transit box is about 10mm thick plate not one of those shim types.

Thanks again

What about modding the linkage to bring the lever forward?

Yeah i know the shims were only to get the hole centres - but im not really convinced i can get them centred perfectly - wheras if i/you use the existing pinto adapter plate (the thick one) and measure from the pinto holes to the new V6 holes it will be a lot more accurate!!
well i think so anyway!!

Yeah modding the linkage could be done but I was hoping there would be just some parts bin swopping exercise to get the job done. anyone know what kind of box went in the factory conversions?
modding the pinto adapter plate would definetely be the way to go as then all the gearbox mounts etc would still be okay
I wonder if the transit box ratios would suit the v6 engine though?

Thanks again

Just a small point, if the Granada has the MT75, and is 2wd. The gearbox is as rare as rocking hourse poo! :)

I know a few people that will give up a few limbs for such an item! :D

I was thinking that, but didn't like to say, in case I had missed something!

No, the 24v was never a manual

Most of the 24v sierra's are 4wd, because the 2.9 fits, easy.

Some of the XR4i's are running hybred boxes, front of a 2.9, rear end 2.0 2wd. hence you end up with a 2.9 2wd MT75

Ford did make a 2wd 2.9 box, just finding one! :)

another problem with using such a rare box is if it ever breaks - you will have a hard and expensive job finding another!! :(
