Transit Turbo Diesel Injector Pump

Postby tim » Tue Jan 10, 2006 10:12 pm

Evening all
Has anybody changed a Transit fly by wire Lucas Epic injector pump to a manual setup.I have been led to believe that if i use a Bosch pump with red tip injectors and accelerator + cable it will work with just a little adjustment to the pump settings. My van which is a turbo diesel with the Lucas Cav Epic Injector pump and ecu has given a lot of trouble over the past year and costs a fortune to repair. If anybody has any tips for converting to a bosch system i would be delighted to hear their views
Thanking you
Tim

Van went into safe mode about a year ago but was able to get home [30mph].I got it to a computer and fault code for cam position senser in pump was the problem. Got pump repaired at great expense and everything went fine for 8 months then van would only tick over on 3 cylinders but would drive as normal.Went to mr pump man again but no faults showing on computer.Get another pump i was told,so i did.Pump #2 after 3 weeks only ticking over on 3 cylinders but driving fine until you meet traffic lights and dip the clutch,it cuts out.I have done everything possible to try to solve the problem eg,new lift pump new filter housing.new injectors.new seals at front of pump for feed and return pipes all to no avail. When work is needed on these pumps it costs an absolute fortune as only a few people work on them. You probably have the same problems as me,

so far none of my problems have been as bad as that so far i have had a loss of power great amount of black smoke hunting and now leaky injecters :x not all in that order but the loss of power and black smoke seem to come and go :x i think my probs could lie in the ecu :? but who knows with these useless electrical gadgets :)

tim i know the feeling mate had one on my last van that cost me £700  seems strange ,are you shure you havent got a injector down????? this would cause the problem and also wouldnt show any faults on the ecu , the turbo di was a great engine but the lucas epic was a piece of sh*t ,lucas should be ashamed of themselves! :(

Good Evening Jay.
Thank you for your reply,I think i might be nearing a result here.Could you get me the type of pump you are using, also i would need the pump # and injectors colour.they have a spot of colour paint on each.I am only getting 20-25mpg on the current setup i have,so consumption does not really bother me.Its just this computer controlled Epic pump its such a load of s**t and its nearly a remorgage to get anything done to it+ 3 or 4 days of the road

I've just had my pump done on my X reg tranny (1st of the new shape), cost me £1157, not impressed to say the least so here's hoping all will be fine as its about to tow a 22ft caravan weighing at 1300kg plus Bifg bike in the back of van, 2 big dogs and lots of equipment all the way to the Costa del Sol (Spain), its a long trip and Im sure it will do me proud, 50~60 is all Im interested in doing.

Back to going manual on the injector pump Im sure is not at all impossible, there are however a few issue that can be of concern and this is how I see it turning out:
1) Frequent oil changes, I'd say to be on the safe side 7000~ 10 000miles tops.
2) Pre mature turbo failure but might not be the case
3) MOT failure due to emmisions, throttle by wire was developed to get engines through regulations and to improve on fuel consumption.

I'd like to find out a bit more on this modification as I think there is alot going for it in many ways. Anyone..?

When i had my 2.5 TD i had these exact same problems. I took it to a diesel specialist in Birmingham and they sujested changing the pump for a manule one. Work involved; new manule pump and the accelerator pedel and cable was changed. The ecu wiring was very slightly altered in order to operate the stop solenoid. The engine management bulb was removed as it will stay on after the pump change. I can honestly say i havent had a single problem with it since and it pulls better than the old epic pump ever did! :D
As far as the injectors goes.......i dont recal them doing anything with them, just used the ones that were insitu.
Hope this helps :D

Thank you for youre reply, and welcome to the transit forum and all of us who have binned the wife for a transit.I have heard of this conversion been done but cannot track anybody down who has done it.What i really need is the injector pump numbers which is on a plate on the left front of the pump and the injector colour which is a colour spot where the pipe is bolted on the injector could be blue ,red, orange, white, etc. If you could get me this information I would be ever so gratefull.

Ok.....i have some numbers for you. The numbers are etched into the side of the pump and to be honest i may be wrong in the interpretation of some digits as the etch isnt brilliant. As follows and reading from the top line down;

0 460 414 145
698-0
956 012883

I cant help with the colour of the injectors as surface rust has eaten through the paint!

There are some more numbers on the top of the pump but i will have to give them a scrub up to read them. ill have a go tonight.
