Brake Failure Mk2

I was out in Alex (LWB Mk2 panel van), came up to a a give way and BAM, the brake pedal hit the floor. Just before (and I don't think this is anything to do with it), I had the AA out to do the clutch cable, so I am having a good day. Looking under the bonnet I though that perhaps the AA patrolman had knocked out the servo pipe, but it was in the servo. There is brake fluid coming OUT of the resevior, from the cap with the brake sensor (there was no warning light for low fluid pressure, and obvoiusly plenty of fluid. The pedal won't pump up, it has little resistance and goes all the way to the floor. I had to stop on the handbrake, but luckily no damage to me, the van or anybody else. I cleaned the cap, pumped it some more and the cap was wet again. I am thinking the brake master has gone, what do you reckon?

TRY CHECKING THE FRONT FLIXIE'S FOR A LEAK,, VERY UNUSUAL FOR A BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER TTO COMPLETELY FAIL WITHOUT ANY WARNING,, CHECK BOTH N/S & O/S BACK PLATES FOR LEAKS. I HAVE SOME S/H BBRAKE MASTER CYLINDERS SOMEWHERE,. GOOD LUCK FRED.

Ta for the offer John, but last year you could still get the brake masters brand new/reconned, which I would prefer. i am going to check on availability tomorrow. The wierd bit is the fluid coming out of the res. All of the back plates are dry.

It does sound like a master cylinder failure fred

Had it have been the servo, the pedal would have just gone hard after the vacuum had been exhausted.

Instead the fluid being pushed down the pipes to the wheels, the fluid is being splashed about.

Right, thanks for confirming that. I would rather it be the master than the servo, as you can't get the Mk2 servo any more and I would have to do the both and go Mk3.

glad your ok fred what with your brake problems and my sticking throttle this week cant get much worse

i would say the master cylinder Fred. My master cylinder went. Symptoms were that the pedal used to go to the floor on occasions then be ok again. changed the cylinder and all is fine.

Well she's in the garage tomorrow but already the general opinion is it's the brake master!

Many of the brake work shops can install a stainless steel sleeve in master and wheel cylinders, extending the life of rubbers and helping them outlast the vehicle by eliminating corrosion.

Must be catching my wifes people carrier brakes have failed, pedal to the floor no fluid in resevoir, topped fluid back up, but when you press pedal fluid dissapears been on it today, the rear shoes had worn down so far, that the shoe had popped out of the cylinder, theres brake fluid sprayed all around wheel arch its wrecked the inside of the drum told her she can have that blue van on ebay she's now gone to bed

Keep working on it mate, my wife drives our van and loves it, i keep trying to convince her to get rid of her corsa and get a transit, its proving to be hard work but i will get there in the end ..........one day

Anyone stuck for seals for master or slave cylimders.I can get them.

I do know that the MK2 servo won't match up to the Mk3 servo, and you can't get the Mk2 servo new any more both the Mk3 master and servo can be made to fit (the servo has the spltting valve internally, so you need to change the brake pipes).

I got the master last night (Lockheed £65 + VAT), drove the van to the garage this morning and the brakes are now FINE . Typical! I will let you know what it is.
