its raining in

Postby thevanwizard » Fri May 19, 2006 9:48 pm

 we have had quite a bit of rain latley and i have noticed that it is leaking in through the roof which i have now sorted i had to weld up a 3" split which was filled with mastic and was dripping in, it is also leaking just above the fuse box somewhere is this a common fault on the transit as it was on the bedford cf or am i an exeption as i never noticed it before on an old works transit many years ago also any ideas how i can stop it as i am trying to sort out the body work before i start on the interior but will have to make an exeption for the drivers seat as it wont slide backwards or forwards and has a nasty rocking motion but need to sort the leak out first there will be a lot more problems i am sure

Remind me what van have you got? The seat might have a bolt missing (mk2s have 6, three on each runner) If one of em goes missing, the seat rocks and distorts the runner, and stops it going back and forwards.

yes thats the one a mk4 got the bigger lights and funily enough it was an ex BT van then a plumber had it and then sold it due to ill health i only got offered it on a second chance offer as the winner had got the owner to tax it so he could get it home and then tried to get the tax included in the winning bid price and the owner said what i would have also said in polite words DO ONE so i was given second chance offer and said i would have it at my bid price plus the road tax its not to bad i suppose i have seen worst on the roads

Looking at the pics on the ebay link...the leak is simply the A pillar, though if you were to pop the windscreen I hate to think what you will find, the rust smear down the driver wing says that it is some serious rust. The seat is simply enough, get down on your hands and knees and clean all around the runners especially towards the back you will dig out loads of crud and stones etc they always seem to find their way in there then you will get the forward and back movement, my very first Transit failed it's MOT for a wobbly seat so I had to have new runners fitted and it was rock solid after that.

i have tried that

Postby thevanwizard » Sat May 20, 2006 8:55 am

I have cleaned out the runners grit screws and rust and give them a good oil and a whack with a sledge hammer and freed the catch that holds them in place with the crow bar and still nothing i am hoping to get the screen out eventualy and get the grinder around to shift some of the rust then get a new screen refitted but thats a bit later for now as the previos owner was rather a very large gentelman and i think the seat has had enough

I had to get a crowbar on the tipper's seat, levering it against the edge of the door opening! Try that, but make sur eyou only lever against the metal seat frame, not the plastic.

I was only crowbaring the release leaver i can see the grinder comming out soon i will cut them out .
Back to the leak i have checked the gromit around the wiring loom and that is ok on further inspection it looks like it is comming from around the speaker area in the foot well as this is soaked i was wondering if it could be comming from around the battery tray as this was a problem on the fiesta .I am now wondering if i did the right thing getting the van as i only wanted something to pull my trailer and its becoming a pain now
