Absolutely! The old 2.8 di turbo 4 cylinder lump in the low tune is 110/125 hp, or 145hp for standard intercooled. With mild tuning it's 160hp. It also has a Bosch pump suitable for running on oil. The new 3.0 litre engine that replaced it is rated up to around 170hp from the factory.

The engine is used in the Iveco, Renault Master, Fiat Ducato, Citroen Relay, Peugeot Boxer (latter 3 all Sevel vans) and Vauxhall Movano as well as sold for industrial/marine use.

It also has the distinction of holding the record for camper van mpg at SBMCC, with 3 models averaging over 30mpg - they are extra long (about 4 ft longer than a LWB transit) extra high roof variants and still got that mpg!

The engine isn't a ford and as you say the van doesn't share much. The Iveco is more like a truck in construction, much heavier built than most other vans - things like oversized track rod ends with built in grease nipples etc.

I wouldn't want an Iveco as the floor is way too high and the cab is very 'truck like'. However the 2.8 Iveco engine variant of the SWB Sevel range I am interested in. Just a shame you can't get the automatic in the UK! The van has a very low floor and is wider than the Transit (6'3 internal headroom on the semi high roof, over 7' on the high roof).

It doesn't come with all the kit of the Tourneo though!!! I think I'm going to have to pick a van and then build it up to Tourneo spec, at least if I go for a 2.8 sevel I'll have a stonking strong drive with 80mph up a hill overtaking ability (on vegatable oil of course!).

depends where you live I suppose, there was a huge police clampdown in LLanelli a couple of years back as all the local taxi drivers were using veg oil so ministry check points were everywhere. I have never been stopped either though

the way i understand it is you declare it at the end of the tax year, if you do get dipped ypu can only be taxed on the amount in the tank? also they are looking for red rather than veggie or heating oil. i dont think they do a chemical analasis of whats in your tank do they?

not sure how the tax thing works, but as a HGV driver I have had my tank dipped on the truck a few times, no they dont do a chemical analysis (although they DO have the facility to do this if they have reasonable suspicion) normally they take a sample and they can tell just by looking at it what you are running on. as you say its more for red diesel than anything else, but these days some of the cowboy operators are using "laundered" diesel (basically red diesel that has had the dye removed by a chemical process. I wouldnt use it, they add lots of acid to burn the dye away and it kills the engine!) and they are checking for this.
this is more popular in other countries, in Ireland they have green diesel instead of red, its called "leprechaun piss!"

as far as im aware as long as you dont use pure cooking oil , whats the difference between mixing it yourself and the bio diesel out of the pump, plenty of people use that now!

the only difference is that pump bio diesel has had the excise duty as a road vehicle fuel paid. veg oil you put in yourself hasnt.

Like I say they are always doing checks around my area and I know for a fact that they do now check for the use of veg oil since that is where the biggest saving is at the moment!
