So, it's doing a re-gen during the time of the screen shot, if so .. temperature is wrong .. too low!

No, that was before the regeneration started but six miles after l reset everything to zero. So it has taken six miles to get close to the point where the ECU is demanding another regeneration.

When l reset it, the actual soot mass was under 1. lt's the "inferred soot level" that's going up very quickly. l've emailed O'Reilly's Autos to see if he can help, (as recommended on here) because l am clearly just going round in circles with this fault.
My Land Rover specialist doesn't know what wrong and their DPF guy after looking at it said he thinks the issue is "before the DPF"

if the issue is before the DPF on 2.2 transit it would be vaporiser .. but on your LR you don't have one of them, instead you have the injector firing during exhaust stroke method . ive no idea if this could be disrupted if the EGR is opening or stuck open ..
so I say check the EGR out

EGR Actual percent % should be following commanded percent % in the pids

usually abbreviated to ACT and CMD

looks like this on forscan see pic below ..NOTE IN PICTURE this EGR is faulty and isn't following

download/file.php?id=57029&mode=view

Wonder if you could use forscan on your LR .. it would then maybe give more detailed info on its fault to us

Thanks for the reply. The commanded and actual position of the EGR is the same. So it looks like the EGR is working.

Next, look at the turbo commanded and actual for the actuator.

Then look at the throttle body in the manifold - this closes in response to what the EGR is doing, to create more vacuum to suck more emissions from the exhaust.

Will do, thanks. Also l don't think l've looked at the engine temperature readings.

The DPF guy recommended on here, O'Riley's Autos, never responded to my emails.

lf you were going to start guessing as to what the fault was, which components would you replace first?

Me , at this stage

i would take the DPF off and have a good look at it

i would also now check the turbo for wear and do a compression test

That's only if you have done the other things a couple of posts back.

I think all you want to do is rely on the diagnostic scanner to tell you what is wrong..

which is a bad move .. the scanner will tell you if EGR is wrong .. or the turbo actuator is wrong, it can tell what the injectors are doing and what the timing is doing and fuel pressure is

it will not tell you if you have , concerning this fault

Worn turbo
Worn pistons and rings , broken ring
Valve trouble lifter trouble.
Engine breather trouble
Engine crankcase pressurisation via failed injector sealing rings

and with some DPF's - faults, its blind to it. some things you've made it blind too - via the DPF reset !
exhaust blockage further down...
Especially since a DPF reset or multiple resets.. is telling to the PCM "this is normal conditions " when it is not!

O'Riley does resets ... yes .. only when he is 100 percent certain that he's cleaned it well ... he does take DPFs off and use a flushing machine in the back of the van , he does tell us numerous times that after market DPFs are no good... AND sometimes he cannot recover a DPF .

AND YOU DON'T REPLACE THE DPF IF THERE IS AN UNDERLINING FAULT WITH SOMETHING ELSE CAUSING EXCESSIVE SOOT .. that has to be fixed first

l reset the DPF twice which l realise was a mistake. But l only reset it after a regeneration when all the readings for soot were at zero anyway.

The engine performs flawlessly with no smoke or lack of power, but the turbo has always had quite a distinct whistle as it spools up particularly when the engine is cold. Could this be indicating a faulty turbo? It's done it since l bought the vehicle last year, although the DPF issue has always been there to a point.

The whistling could also be a leak in the boost pipes .. any leak in the boost pipes will cause it to run rich with excessive smoke.

There was a fault on the 2.2 transits where the boost pipe rubbed through on the alternator mount

i don't know what a normal 2.2 LR sounds like .. as some turbos do whistle ..mainly the special turbos that have been installed as upgrade for higher performance.

performance upgraded turbo sound

The hoses have been checked and l can see the one that rubs on the alternator. But it looks okay.

Looking online there's a few threads about way too frequent DPF regeneration on the Ford 2.2tdci and none of them have ever ended with a solution.

Here's one that ran for years.

https://www.talkford.com/threads/dpf-co ... ng.303697/

And another

Something must be causing it !

The 2.0 ecoblue transit had a fault a few years ago, where it did too many regeneration's, that engine had re-gen via exhaust stroke injection .. they had to have a software upgrade .. because it also put a load of diesel into the engine oil .. watch out for rising oil levels.

see fords letter at the bottom of this thread

viewtopic.php?f=65&t=195578&hilit=raised+oil+level

i did find this regarding LAND ROVER:
Software Updates: Check with an authorized specialist or dealer to ensure the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) has the latest official Land Rover calibration updates, which address overly sensitive DPF calculation algorithms on late Puma 2.2 models.

Yes l do monitor the engine oil level. l change it when the level rises around 1cm on the dipstick.

l've done 8,000 miles since November 2025 and have replaced the oil 12 times. During the Winter it was every 500 miles. lf l can't resolve the issue l am going to have to sell the vehicle and l will be buying something with a petrol engine.

l've recently had a new ECU fitted and they updated it with the last available software for the Defender Puma 2.2
The garage were convinced it was software related but it made no difference at all.

like i said ME

take it off ...... piece of mind .. it would always be bugging me if i did not take it off and look

some of these dpfs have permanently blocked passages .. and a regen just clears the center.. hence why it performs ok for 30 miles then fills up regens .. that's my final theory

like so .. but probably worse

http://www.turbopacs.com/wp-content/upl ... G_4256.jpg

BTW .. its sometimes possible to put and ensdoscope through the heat sensor or pressure sensor holes and see what's going on

endoscope can be had for as little as £22

l've got an endoscope so will give that a try. However the garage and DPF guy are convinced that the DPF is okay because the differential pressure readings are not elevated and the actual soot level reading is very low.

The only thing l can do is buy a DPF (l can get a new "take off" genuine Land Rover one for £600) and get the garage to fit it regardless of what they think.

If it makes no difference, l guess l will be £1,000 down and at least l will know what it isn't.

when the garage tested it .. it wasn't blocked .. so everything would look normal to them.
