Thanks Jay & SteveW.

Sadly there's no separate lift pump on mine.

Like Steve, I've seen other diesels not run or fail to rev up, because of a ruptured or holed diaphragm in the lift pump. In this instance, its as though the injection pump is pumping but without any real pressure (As fuel is being pumped back to the filter but not up to the injectors).

One thing I did notice, that the bottom of the pump was wet with fuel at the back, near the small pipe which runs from the base up to what I assume is the vacuum. I can't be certain though, that this isn't fuel sprayed from the filter housing when I had the pipe from that to the pump disconnected. I checked both of the unions on this small pipe, just in case, but they both appeared to be tight.
The wife said it's either that van or me. Well, all I can say is, I've still got the Transit!

I know you said that the belt wa still intact and that the pump was turning during cranking, but is the timing OK?

if you fit the gallon can and fuel pipe to the camshaft driven lift pump and undo the connection into the filter head and crank it, does the primer pump deliver fuel?

The bosch pumps don't have a transfer pump in them, so without the primer it's difficult for the pump to draw fuel.

so then, you'll have established that the fuel low pressure feed is good, the point of injection is good

you've already told us that the feed to the solenoid and the solenoid are good.

with the injector pipes opened a turn or so, crank the engine for at least 20 seconds, how high does the fuel squirt?

if the low side is fully primed(bled) and nothing is coming out at the injector end of the pipes.....you've got a pump problem

It SHOULD have the pump, they were fitted from 89 onwards--->

it's on the other side of the engine to the fuel pump, hidden by the exhaust, but you can get on it and it's push fit pipe connectors.

I've got a similar problem with my Transit which was running fine and now won't start. Just wondered if you'd tracked down what was wrong with yours in the end?
