If you are fitting new work lights, and interior lights, why not bring one feed from the battery, via fuse, to the rear of the van, and then use a 2 way fuse box to do your additions? That way all your bits are isolated from the existing, and you wont have to splice into old wires, which is always hit and miss.
Where did you get marker lights from, and if I'm really nosey, how much.? I want some on my van, but finding good quality at a sensible price is hard.

Rubbolite make the tastiest marker lights you have ever seen,They fit on the curve of the roof of the van. They are small and neat and very bright at night

I assume it's upwards, across the top of the side door and along the top of the van into the overhead storage and down the front pillar into the engine compartment. Would this be right?

That would sound logical but I dont know. Wondered how you got on tracing the wires back? On my Mk4 the rear cluster wires go up to the roof gulleys then along the top for the length of the van. I know because I just fitted some rear speakers and took a lot of skin off my arms in threading wires up through the roof space!
Should be worth it though: It will stop the kids telling me they cant hear the music in the back
