It could well be the cam belt tensioner bearings gone bad.

I can't believe how many people do the cambelt without changing the tesioner, that's the bit that causes most the problems!

The tensioner was done at the last belt change. about 10thou ago. Are they sealed bearings on them?

Doesn't the fan sit on it's own bearing on the DI not on the waterpump?

Yep. the fan sits on another casting (not water pump)

i think they changed the design early ones do! :D

on my E reg i got a new water pump cos the fan was wobbling all over the place and i thought the waterpump bearing had gone :lol: .
stripped it all down to find out it was the bit the fan sits on was knackerd :oops: still put the new pump on anyway while the front was off :lol:
