Urgent Help needed for a dying band in a van...

If you used the starter to wind it on to the hard shoulder, then I think the starter is on its last legs... usually damages the shaft.

any ideas on how i could check this out?

and if it were to shaft..(the van starts every time no problem) how long do you think we have to go before we cant drive it anymore or it causes some permanent damage to where the van is useless...

i was planning on having a proper look in the morning as to where the noise is coming from...

any help on how i can take out a starter and what to look for?

would a starter make this kind of noise?

Before you start pulling parts off have a good crawl over it and find out where the noise is coming from
