Thanks for all the replies and comments guys.

Oh dear! I am using 1ml of acetone to 1Litre of fuel. Up till now, I thought that this was a moderate amount. Am I using too much? How much (or little) are others using? Best to say in millilitres of acetone per litre of fuel methinks to avoid confusion.

Reading the acetone treads made me believe its better not to try this: to many risks :| :? :?:

Yes Linus, I did all this reading before I started using acetone. All of the negative comments seem to come from folk who have never tried the stuff. They just seem to comment on the general potent properties of neat acetone, which we are all aware of. Some users have been using it for many years with no problems in petrol and diesel engines, and I based my decision to try it on this basis.

Needless to say, I could be wrong

Today tried the two stroke oil, in my van. I havent gave it a long run but as soon as I left it at idle, and fuel circulated, It does sound smoother, and a certain noise associated with the Cav pump (like tikking) has gone or diminished, if its not my imagination
Have also gave it a doze of acitone, using 1.6mL with every litre of diesel.
For those interested have a read
http://www.brightgreen.us/lubedev/smartgas/additive.htm

Have read parts of it , its too long
and it says that exessive ammounts than those stated would only diminish the mpg gain.
Seems an interesting subject....

Maybe if you give it a try you can tell if it made a difference or not.
I think that by the ammount of rapeseed you'r putting , its enough to lubricatethe fuel system, since rapeseed has more lubricating propertes than the Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) presently distributed to most europe.

One fact that you should note is that although rapeseed is intended to reduce the greenhouse gases, it is likley to produce more hazardous gasses than just C02

Interesting, as I did try the acetone with no benefit, wasnt crazy about it in the 1st place but the 2 stroke oil makes sense so its one I will try.
Another bonus for those who are capable is to de cat and do the EGR blank off, works really well and would say its the best mod you could do for your trusty tranny

Re: two stroke oil in the diesel ?

Postby toniel » Thu May 07, 2009 12:28 pm

As I was in town a few days ago,on one of my rare visits, I bought 2 X 1 Litres of 2 stroke oil. I also filled the tranny tank up so that I could do an acetone plus fuel MPG calculation before I started using the 2 stroke. Like viper mentioned, my results are dissapointing, too.

Before acetone was added over 8506 miles of varying driving MPG = 32.8

Acetone/fuel mix (1mL to 1L) 763 miles of varying driving MPG = 31.76 Yes! Slightly worse!

The first thing I must point out, up till my most recent addition of acetone, the stuff I was using was in 50mL bottles bought from pharmacy shops. This may or may not have been ideal.
Recently, I bought a 5 Litre can from a paint supplier. I paid about £25 for this and I am having a big think if I should abandon the acetone altogether or try altering the dose.

Anyway, about 11 miles from home, on the town shopping day, I added 300ml of the 2 stroke oil to the almost full tranny tank. After a few miles the reduction in engine noise was huge. What a difference! It seemed to be much smoother too.

This morning, I had to go out so opted to use the tranny to make sure I was not dreaming and to see what a cold start was like with the new mix. My vehicle has always been an ace starter so no change there. The quietness though was truly amazing. In fact now my ears cannot detect any difference in the engine noise level between it being hot or cold. Now I notice the noise of the heater fan.
So, my initial reactions to adding 2 stroke are very good.

250 to 300ml per full Tranny tank (68 Litres) seems to be the stated going rate. It would be handy if I knew the amount per Litre of diesel but my maths is useless and getting worse. I have hardly used my van since I put in the first 300mL but that will all change next weekend when I go off touring, so will report back here with MPG when I return.

I'm off to the IOM this week - a 350ish mile trip. I'll top up the tank and add 300ml of 2-stroke. I will do the same on the way back and report my experience
