Mk 6 (?!) Transit engines

Postby fastmower » Tue Jul 05, 2005 5:35 pm

Hi all,

I'm having a bit of a job finding a double cab Transit dropside or tipper at the moment with the 125ps engine in it. The detailed specs of the engines are a little thin on the Ford website - but it looks like several of them are basically the same 2.4 litre lump.

I was talking to a guy about a particular truck the other day, and he said he'd seen one that was rated at something over 200hp - not a Transit - this was a 7.5 tonner - but basically it was the normal engine (around 140ps) and all that had been altered was the boost on the turbo and some setting on the fuel pump.

Question is - is this kind of job possible on the 90ps Transit engine - and is it as simple as altering a few settings (or having someone clever alter them for you!) Is the 125ps engine the same as the 90ps but just set up differently?

The way things are going with the search I might end up settling for the 90ps instead, but having read a couple of reviews I'd rather have the bigger output engine.

Anyone shed any light on the subject?

TIA,

Andy

Welcome, fastmower, that's be the Mk4 engine then, Ford says there are only 4 transits!! Sorry, cant help about the outputs, though i know there are a lot the later they are, if you have an engine in mind, the clue is in the code on the side of the pump, the chassis no if you have one and the VIN plate. With at least one of these, you should be able to find out which engine it is (if you are in a scrappie near the van, call a ford dealer with the codes, that what I do!)

Hi Fred,

Ta for that - wondered if the old "Mark 6" thing would rattle your cage

The engine thing - I know the truck I'm looking at has the 90ps engine - as the majority of them seem to. The 125ps engine is an option, and looks to be based on the same 2.4 lump as the 90. What I want to know is whether the two actual engines are in fact the same but with the turbo and fuel pump set differently?

Thanks for the welcome too by the way - I'm sure I'll get to be a regular visitor in here!

All the best for now,

Andy

I wonder if this is the magical and elusive 415 Bosch pumped engine? High output, best top end. it was recommended to me as an option to the TDi!!

Di with bosch 415 ended in approx 1995/1996 when it went to bosch 624,and they done away with the cold start solonoid on the side, 90psTrany Duratorq is the same basic 2.4 unit as 125ps and even the 75ps its down to the programing and different turbo and ancilleries :D

When I said option, maybe I should have said alternative.

These are the engines listed for the twin rear wheel long wheelbase Transit 350 on the Ford website

2.4 TD 90 PS/115 PS

2.4 TD 125 PS Durashift EST auto

2.4 TD 137 PS

2.3 Petrol 145 PS*

Engine – 2.4 Di TDi (90 PS) 220 Nm / 2.4
Di TDi (115 PS) 285 Nm / 2.4 Di TDCi (137
PS) 375 Nm / 2.4 Di TDi (125 PS) 285 Nm
Durashift only

This super chip sounds interesting though - I'm not after dragstrip performance or anything - but I'm away with the mowers most weekends in the summer and we have a lot of stuff to carry as well as the caravan on the back - so a bit more grunt would be nice and make for a more relaxed drive. Anyone have any thoughts/experience of this chip thingy?

im afraid, no chips no power  the microchip has opened up the world of power and economy, adjusting timing and so-on while your driving 8) your old Di will be lucky if it gives out 80ps and it drinks a fair bit of fuel to give you that, these new ones give up to (standard)137ps and use return better mpg for the pleasure of it   the only way forward is with the help of a microchip or two, these old dinosaurs are good as hobbies or showpieces but day to day work motor, gotta be a mk6 with as many microchips as possible and dont forget the power steering as standard eh Fred

Hehe - what have I started now

My current Transit is a '91 LWB, and whilst it's not the fastest thing on the block, it always gets me there sooner or later, and I'll be sorry to see the back of her! Never given me a hint of trouble and solid as a rock underneath - no welding or rust anywhere. Anyway...

I had a look at a possible replacement today which was probably the dirtiest truck I've ever seen in my life - but the price is right, and under the muck it looks to be in reasonable nick. I figure I can spend the money I save buying it on making it nice again - or at least getting it to a state where my better half will get in the thing! I had a quick run out in this motor and it seemed incredibly sluggish - which I mentioned when I got back to the garage, and the guy said he'd noticed too (though he hadn't mentioned it before!) Anyway he's had it looked at this afternoon, and it was something in the electrickery somewhere not sending the "do something" signal to the turbo. He's got the new bit on the way, so hopefully things will be better when I have another look. I had exactly the same problem on a Mondeo diesel turbo a few years back as it happens...

I've also had a quick look round on t'internet, and found a couple of places doing chip re-programming etc - so I'll give them a call and see what they say.

Thanks for your help guys - top service!

If you want more power/torque/economy just fit an oversized aftermarket intercooler and have it chip tuned, should be good for a 30% boost while keeping egt's low.

As an example the VW 1.9 TDi PD 130hp jumps to 187hp with a chip alone and gets 10% better fuel economy.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. One of me hobby motors is currently on Paris, the week before another in Milan. They seemed to manage even the Alps (tunnel)..................
