2.5di turbo on veg oil as a fuel

Postby greg123 » Tue Jul 05, 2005 9:28 pm

Hi,

I'm a veg oil burner and qualified lpg fitter. However though I have experience with the engine I'd love to know if anyone has run the (obviously bosch pump model) 2.5 di turbo on veg?

If so what is it like on it, what % mix will it start well on etc.

have you used LPG with diesel? make a fair difference
like sticking a turbo on the thing.
Don't have one meself but have driven a camper with it fitted tried it with the gas on and off and it's as i said like switching a turbo on but without the lag
i think he used a 20% mix but not to sure it was a few years back when the systems where new.

Hi,

I haven't used lpg fumigation on a diesel myself though I plan to on this project. It works best on direct injection engines and particularly turbos and isn't really suitable for indirect injection engines it can cause problems with them. Around a 20% mix can give around 30% more power/torque so yes as you say like a good turbo! A VW TDi 1.9 old engine has been built with a large turbo, special injectors, massive intercooler and LPG fumigation it's putting out over 250hp and some crazy torque something like 500lb/ft I think. It also reduces black smoke as it enables all diesel to burn efficiently and reduces oil contamination.

I think a veg/lpg combo will raise a few 'what is that!' eyebrows.

Hi,

AFIK no new type's have a 2.5, the biggest they have is a 2.4. As you say I'm looking at the 2.5 di turbo mk3, I couldn't use a lucas pump anyhow as they will fail on oil so I would be looking for one with the bosch turbo pump on it (I have seen several).

If anyone knows if there was rhyme or reason to which turbo models got Bosch and which got Lucas I'd be interested. I have a feeling the Bosch ones were not drive by wire from the pictures I have seen of the pump.

hmm beginning to wonder what particular model these bosch turbo pumps were for, wonder if it was for one of the last ones (seems there has been 68,70,76,80,100,115hp versions of the DI) with the strange variants of turbo which I think were more to get the old engine through emmisions than for power.

If they are all lucas, combined with the AL4D boxes issues about staying togetether (especially with a ton payload and 50% extra power) I am beginning to think my Tourneo idea is a pipe dream and I had better start thinking of how to fit an auto to a 2.8tdi sofim engined Ducato.....

greg di mk3 turbos were 85ps and 100ps and rare 115ps only long wheelbase or six stud 150 transits! short wheelbase only 85ps manual or auto! oh and auto lwb only 85ps :D
great set up when working corectly no smoke etc and alot less noisey than standard di ,but most had pump problems with hunting! this will set you back nearly £1000 to sort it out! :(

Thanks. The non-turbo 68,70,76 & 80 - do you know the differences between them? An extra 5hp for the turbo over the 80hp non turbo doesn't seem earth shattering does it, the old peugeot idi of the same era was 115hp. I guess the 115hp Transit was with intercooler?

Hi Mark, i have had a few "banana" di engines running at 80ps, these i noticed all came from what i used to call the new generation transit, year approx 92-94 stating on the cambelt cover 80ps on the same style sticker as all the run of the mill 70ps and 76ps units :?

When the Di came out it was 68, I have the first mk3 ford brochure and it too lists it at 68hp, as it was in the last of the mk2's. I guess it went to 70hp soon after, probably just a very slight change in pump tuning or different brand pump or something like that.

In any case I'm after 150/160hp so I guess I'm dead out of luck with a Di which can do that, on veg, and have an auto box that will stay together with that torque!
