engine not stopping!

hello,bought a 99t reg transit ,has fault with ignition ? switch of ignition and engine does not always stop can even remove the key usually giving a bit throttle the engine cuts out ,one time it did not start ,advised to lock doors and and try again and it did start .have had new keys made by ford dealer and garage that sold van also replaced the unit on steering wheel expecting the contacts to be sticking but tonight it has been very reluctant to stop ! had to stall any ideas of where problem lies much appreciated

Welcome Iain, can't help with your problem as my knowledge stops at around 1988!! I am sure somebody on here will though. :D

I would say it's probably got something to do with the stop/run solenoid which is within the fuel pump, so I would take it to a diesel fuel pump specialist and they will probably have it sorted in no time at all!

Hi the fuelpump is breaking up inside and the metal fillings produced gather around the stop solonoid as its magnetic thus jaming the solonoid and causing the vehicle not to switch off correctly, when replacing the pump be sure to clean the whole fuel system tank and all as diesels circulate the fuel so metal fillings will be all round the system and will contaminate the new pump :D

Yeah was thinking that Geoff but didn't want to put a downer on the new van, but you're probably right!

yes diesel and bits of metal.another thought i am in scottish borders and going to rye on the south coast at weekend and time for getting pump checked is limited is it likely at some point engine will refuse to start .thanks
