Whining rear axle...

Postby cheva_1974 » Thu Aug 04, 2005 7:01 pm

My 69-Transit´s rear axle is whining at higher speeds, I think the differential is worn. :( There´s a huge play in the pinion! Isn´t this a common problem with at least the old Transits?? What can I do about it? Is it repairable or must I exchange the whole axle..? Not very easy to find one these days.. I don´t think it´s the wheel bearings whining but I haven´t checked them.

Thanks for the answers on my earlier question about putting a diesel engine in my Transit!

I dont know if the mk1 diffs are the same as the mk2s,
if they are you can fit new crown gear and pinion from a mk3 axel of the same type ie. mk3 F type diif parts fit F type mk2 diffs

Hi there,

I fitted an Mk2 axle under my Mk1 and it was whining loudly.
It turned out to be the bearings. Diff was fine.
However, it is said that one can easily damage ones diff if it is not installed correctly. So you never now. Maybe Mark can say more.
