SWB MK6 85 t260 Battery Drain

Postby aaron.d » Sun Aug 03, 2014 12:55 pm

Hi,

I recently bought a mk6 transit. The 2nd Previous Owner had an isolator fitted to the battery as there is a current draw resulting in the battery going flat.

I would really like to find the current draw and fix it.

I connected up my current clamp and it is showing a current draw of 5.9-6 amps when nothing is on.

Pulled all fuses at passenger side fuse box and underbonet fuse box and not one changed.

Turned the van on for 15minutes or so to charge it a wee bit when switched off checked current draw again and it had gone up to 8.36 Amps, the cooling fan was not on.

Going to disconnect the Alternator next to see if this is the culprit, any other ideas?

I disconnected all the fuses in turn and the draw remained so don't think could be them?

 Glow plugs :?:

I don't think that these have a conventional fuse, so you haven't isolated them

Did you only unplug the connector at the alternator.

If so try disconnecting the heavy red wire at the stud as well.

Does the alternator get warm when the engine is cold and the battery is connected. Then you have a shorted diode in the alt.

Disconnected both, unplugged the connector first still current draw so then removed the red wire and there was still a current draw :(

So had a quick look and was looking for the sure to the glow plugs that burns/fuses. Wasnt loose but clear someone had insulated taped up in the loom, so took it off and found it ImageImage

So it's still connected but not in best nick, guessing it shouldn't be taped into the loom like it was either

Yes, battery is good.

The wire shown above (the glow plug fuseable link), should this be getting power when the keys are not in the ignition?

I used the voltmeter to check from the bare wire to the engine earth and had a voltage, is this correct?

where do i disconnect this wire?
