2008 MK7 2.4 Hot Start Problem

Postby Nexo » Wed Jan 07, 2015 8:05 pm

Hi all, great forum, hopefully somebody can help me out here. My 2008 2.4 transit is having problems with hot starting. It is fine when cold but after it warms up if it's switched off and I attempt to restart, it runs for 2-3 seconds and then dies. If I leave it for about 5 mins it starts fine but if I switch off and attempt to restart the problem reappears. I've tried starting and shutting off a couple of times when it's cold and there is no problem.
The only fault code appearing is P251a (power take off circuit open)
Thanks in advance for all replies

Forgot to mention the van was serviced about 2000 miles ago and all filters were replaced using genuine ford parts.
The engine does sometimes hunt slightly on tick over.

Don't worry about pto, go into Rev limiting and set it to none and it'll go.
Only thing i can think of with your problem maybe the cht sensor is faulty?
Hunting maybe the scv but it never stops a van starting imo, you can do a pcm update and pump/injectors learn if that helps.
When you have this problem did you look in the fuel filter to see if it is full? I imagine it would be if the van starts after it cools down but these checks are free i guess.
Maybe do a live data or starting concerns.
Do you have ids?

Thank you for your reply loot34

I have an autoboss diagnostic machine. What live data sections should I run?

You want to look At cht, other temps, fuel pressure etc, whatever you can really to see if they look normal.
I have ids which is the right 1 for the job (although i haven't used many other high end kits tbh) So i can run tests specific to the van, if yours is generic then it may not show the full picture.
You could just replace the cht sensor with a known working 1, might be quicker, can't see them being expensive new or second hand but i haven't checked really. It may be something else tho but i think it must be something temperature related if its Bob on when cold.

I tried starting, shutting down and restarting a couple of times this eve while the engine was cold and it conked out once. It did start on the second attempt but the engine began hunting. I tried a couple more start-stop cycles but it started ok
On a side note I did pull into an unbranded fuel station selling diesel a bit cheaper than the main guys. It may be coincidence but the problem did start after that last fill. I still have half a tank of that diesel left in the tank

I can't see the cht reading in that lot, i think ids has a test for it specifically.
Your numbers seem to show nominal but i have no reference for them but at least they aren't reading out of range from what i can see.

I'd be inclined to check the pressure relief valve on the fuel rail, i believe you can unclip the pipe with the engine running and if fuel shoots out of the rail then the prv needs replacing along with the scv and updates/learns doing, i take the prv off myself tho.
If yours is a generic code reader i think you'll need ids, where abouts are you maybe a member can help?

Can anyone confirm that the fuel rail pressure at tickover is 20.00 kpa?

I think it says 20.87 Mpa Loot...

But the fuel rail temp seems a tad low @ 3c..! One would assume that if it's been running for a minute or so the fuel temp would be higher than 3c..especially since the ambient air temp reads 9c...!? Maybe the pressure/temp sensor is on the way out..?

I would agree with that, seen it on two different vans in the family, crank sensor both times :(

I was going to mention the crank sensor but i thought it would have had more problems than this, is it possible it could be expansion?
Worth a try tho :-)

Thanks lads for all the input. It's prob worth shelling out on a crank sensor...fingers crossed that'll sort it
