I feel rather stupid as I was unaware it was a left hand thread. Anyway can anyone help with some information on the stud part code and where I can purchase it and also the left hand thread wheel nut
Many thanks

Thank you for your help.

Unfortunately still having big problems finding the correct stud.
The transit camper ( conversion) is a 1989 100l
Wheels are 14" six stud ( offside right hand thread, nearside left hand thread)
Rear axle is single wheel German type with 12 bolt diff cover
Wheel studs are M16 x 1,5 and total length 64mm

Thanks for your help

Hm.. I have a picture of the package of the ones I used in my van and the print on it is as followed:

1 427 964
STUD
STIFTSCHRAUBE
ESPARRAGO
GOUJON
VITE PRIGION.
2402E 1119 D
HPMS.NO.
MFL001

--> So pretty sure the number is 1427964. Those studs where for my rear axle, left-thread (L)

Thanks for all the info guys,
Managed to get the studs and nuts from motomobil Germany,
seems like the only place on the planet that has them.
I bought two for spare just in case. Quite expensive about £55 for three studs and nuts ( this includes postage)
But a great company to deal with, delivery was very fast, I can highly recommend this company.

One question
I could not undo the fill / level plug on the differential so jacked up one side of the van quite high and removed the half shaft and poured new diff oil straight in, roughly the same amount that came out when changing the studs. Will this be OK or is there something I may have missed?

That should be it, just take care to seal the half shaft proper: seal removal, oil removal, new seal-paste (I think I put it on the shaft itself as it is easier). Also put new grease on the outer wheel-bearing and check the inner one. By the way, does anyone have the partnumber for those half shaft nuts? Mine are a bit woren out...

Yes I put gasket sealant on the face of the shaft where it buts up to the drum.
I also packed the bearings with grease, but to be honest I later wondered if this was the correct way.
Surely the axle oil has free movement to the bearings would this not lubricate them and the grease might act as a barrier?
Maybe I'm way off the mark but just a thought, what do you think?

Haha :D Well, this bearing gave me some sleepless nights as well. In fact, the outer bearing deffinetelly runs in the axle oil, the inner one does have a rubber sealing to prevent running in the axle oil. Still, the Hayne's repair manual tells to grease both of them, which confused me a while ago. But a mechanic explained to me that this grease is better for the bearing than the axle oil, although the axle oil is quiet viscous. So the outer bearing runs on grease for a long time, until it is washed out / serviced again. The inner one runs on grease for a very long time, until the rubber sealing breaks and than can still run for quiet a while on axle oil as a backup. I had a broken sealing in an inner bearing once and didn't notice anything, until I opened the axle for another reason.
This little bit of grease retourning to the axle oil by the way is also not a problem. You could maybe run the complete axle in grease, would be more load for the rest of the drivetrain but it should work.

Looks like this problem was solved, but I'm looking for help locating the fill plug for the rear diff on the mk3 - can't find it anywhere and the manual just tells you it exists!

Thanks

Nevermind. Found it on the bottom of the housing facing towards the front of the van.

Hi guys!

Coming back on this old post. I recently changed rear brake pads, and i want to share as i worked on bearing fixing nuts.
I used, as described on Haynes manual, a dial gauge, so:

1) Rear brake pads change
2) Re-mounting rear drum with bearings, on shaft, and check rotation. I give 5-6 run to the drum to be sure play was dealt.
3) Put on shaf the firs nut, turn it, and accost to external bearing.
4) At this point, fix on drum the dial gauge and set the feeler on external shaft face, and test the play.
5) turn the nut (by hand) till you reach the play as described in manual (from 0.05 mm to 0.2) i set it at 0.05mm.
5.5) Turn drum 6-7 times and repeat this operation till play keep costant.
6) after that put on tab washer and the second nut.
7) tight second nut at 85 nxm.
8) remeber to fol tab washer tabs on nuts.

Drums final runs easly and with out strange play.
