i had a little prang the other day and stoved the passengers door in at the same time time pillar recieved a very small dent i have managed to get a new door went to fit it this morning, i got all on but it wont shut the lock doesnt appear to be holding it just springs back open! the locking mechanism seems to be fine could it have anything to do with the pillar being dented???

with the door open if you push a screwdriver into the lock on the door (where the pillar pin goes) does it lock shut?

in a word "yes" it is likely that the door latch post moved, this is not an uncommon event in accidents, it could also be down to the dent too of course, try adjusting the striker plate positioning.

these answers are working on the priciple that when you say the pillar got dented, it is not the pillar the hinges are mounted on you are refering too

thanks for your help the pillar is ok but having disassembled the lock into a million pieces it is very worn have ordered a new lock so hopefully that will cure the problem what a nightmare to fit though took me an hour just to get the old one out yesterday!
