whitish smoke and spluttering

Postby bertiee » Wed Sep 28, 2005 5:30 pm

chaps, can u help me, I have a 2.5 non turbo s reg 1998 diesel tranny...on a morning it starts first turn but splutters as though running on 3 cylinders...also whiteish smoke bellows from the exhaust. After a few revs all this disaapears and the van runs as normal.. Sometimes during the day it will just start smoking white again but will clear if revved.

I've renewed the fuel filter, popped some diesel cleaner in the tank and filled up from another garage...incase water was in the diesel...this has been going on a week now....also changed air filter...

a mate dipped a probe in the header tank which confirmed no oil in the water...also the van uses no water or oil...oil is clear on dip stick.

could it be the fuel pump leaking air or indeed buggered....or is the tranny prone to another fault that I have missed/

many thabks

First of all let me say welcome to the site.

A knacked injector will cause white smoke and if you say it sounds like it's running on 3 cylinders then I would say that this is the most likely fault.

Next time it does it try cracking the injector pipes one by one to find out which injector it could be.

try this, its a bit like making sure the fuse isnt blown before you thro yer telly away and get a new one! best bet is to check the things that cost nothing to try out rather than jumping in and getting a set of exchange injectors when this might not be the problem. this is an official ford mod, i have a tech cd with all the revisions for the up to 2000 vans, a guy was flogging em on ebay, also has info on all fords up to about 2000. check previous threads on poor performance, sometimes its the leak off rail, sometimes egr, or very rarely a knackered pump, my van has done 161000 miles and runs perfectly. as i said on a previous thread, never had to replace a pump or injector yet in thousands of miles / hours on various derv engines. good luck
