Sloppy gear change m6 fwd

Postby Warloks38 » Sun Sep 09, 2018 4:00 pm

Hi after sorting the starting problem on my van I'm now trying to tackle the next one which is the gear change issue I've Been reading a lot about the problems with the selector and cables being problematic.my problem is that it has no definitive into gear feeling its just guessing where the gears are and reverse is a bit of a challenge it sometimes jumps out of first.I need to look at the mechanism and remove the selector from the gearbox but I'm worried that if the bolt is broken then it's going to drop in the gearbox.any ideas why it's not selecting so I can go straight in and fix it without taking everything apart.also if the bolt is broken would I still get gears or does the gearchange selector stop working with the bolt broken.
Thanks everyone

I would start with the cables, and check the mounting for them isn’t breaking away. Other than that you may need a new selecter. Good luck

You have two gear selectors, connected with cables. One in the gearbox, second one under floor, under gear stick.
Are two cables, one with blue ends, secon ith gray ends. Cable with blue ends vertically touch selector shaft in gearbox, cable with gray end turn selector shaft and puts in gear.
So - propably problem is with cable with gray ends.
Open selector cover under floor, one person move gear stick, secong looks for gray ends, is it ok, without slack; check both ends, under floor and on the gerabox. If gray cable is broken (ends, clips and locking sliders), replace it for new one and adjust it in correct neutral position in selector under floor.
If you are sure about cables, disconnect both cables on selector in gearbox and check by hand how selector shift works; turn it on every one level, check it how it works verically. It must works with palpable, springy resilient with detectable slack.
If selector shift works with decided resistance without slack (turn and vertically) - selector bearing is broken (corroded).
If on selector are very, very big slacks - selector for the exchange.

On the picture cable with gray ends - redarrow.
