rear heater hoses on mk6

Postby bigfunnyfarm » Sun Sep 16, 2018 11:48 am

I have a mk6 transit minibus and had to have some welding done and they broke the heater valve where the hoses come into the heater unit, I have now replaced the unit but need to know which of the 2 hoses is the flow and which is the return as they just looped the hoses up and now don't know which one is which.
is there a easy way of telling before re fitting ?
thanks in advance for any help

You may find that they will only go one way round as one may be shorter but should work any way round

thanks but they cut the hoses so the could loop them so they are not as they came off.
also the new valve unit has arrows on it indicating what the flow should be.

With the engine cold start it up then lay underneath the van and hold on to the pipes and feel them and you may find which one gets hot first that will be the feed side if you can get someone to hold the revs up a bit but just make sure the van is not going to move and run you over

If they are on the left hand side as you look into the engine bay the hoses come from round the back of the engine the top one goes to the top of the heater bottom one to the bottom.

thanks guys for your answers, I will have to check on that tomorrow I've just finished putting it back together now and will have to see if I've guessed right or not lol.
but I will climb back under and see if I can follow the hoses all the back from the engine.
when you say the top one goes to the heater do mean that one is the flow?
also I think the motor that drives the flap to divert blower from top to side air vents is not working as only seems to blow out of top air vents
thanks again

Don't know which is the flow as mine look well and truly clamped up but the pipes are metal round the back of the engine so i would just follow them to see which goes where. As for the flap probably internal lever come off.

they are a mix of metal and rubber as it goes down the side of the van and seems to twist round in places so doesn't make it easy to follow.
how will I know if I've got the hoses round the wrong way on the rear heater? Will it always blow hot air or will it just blow cold or will it not really matter?

Just try it it’s not a long job to swoop them over you will just loose a bit of antifreeze

yeah that's what I'll do and I've got plenty of spare antifreeze .
I also changed the thermostat while I was doing it as front heater wasn't getting that hot so see if that makes a difference
