Smoke coming from air vent - 2009 transit

Postby smokingvents » Sat Sep 22, 2018 9:11 pm

Hi,

I finished a short 5 mile drive today, got back, turned off vehicle. Cup of tea, came back to the van.

Then I hear the fitted smoke alarm going off - there's a fire!?

Jumped in, smoke coming from the centre dash vent. Not billowing but still a serious amount. Not steam or mist. Acrid smoke.

I didn't even use the heaters today, in fact I never have since I bought this vehicle only earlier in the Summer - so that is odd.

On the floor under the dash, directly under the radio, there is a mysterious slick / spill. Coolant? I don't know.

Any thoughts? A leak in the heater coil? Any ideas to fix?

Thanks a lot fellas.

You really aught to be getting in there and find it, there's a fair amount of wires behind. On mine I noticed that there is a big ass grey connector (I added a special fusebox that required unplugging this connector and connecting a sub loom connector) anyway mine was lifted but plugged enough to work but could have arced, that is in the centre on the right side near the back of you remove the plastic trim panel drivers side.

That said, if the smoke was coming from inside the air vent and assuming the plastic ducting is sealed then one must believe that the smoke is coming directly from the heater blower motor, but if the fan was off then how can it short out?
Fuse f55 is power to the motor so you can remove that providing it doesn't power anything else too.

Possibly a faulty control panel or blower motor resistor but can you confirm the key was out when it happened or were you using the van

Key was definitely out. I had left the vehicle and come back to it.

There is still electric charge going on though isn't there, since the radio clock still displays...

The smoke stopped on its own about 2 minutes after.

Thanks for all the help. I do not have aircon.
