marinisation of diesel engines

Postby freebee » Mon Sep 24, 2018 10:09 pm

I have a fast petrol powered classic boat, it has volvo penta 290 outdrives. I want to convert to twin diesel I think I need each engine to be about 150hp + . Is it possible to use transit engines? has anybody done this already? which model number and mark of engine should I use as the core?

The only diesel Transit engines which produce that sort of power are the 3.2L 5 pot @ 200ps...Mk7, good luck finding a couple of those. Or the later model 2.2's @155ps...-ish. The Ranger engines are similar.

quite a few turbo 2.5Di engines are boat converted

with the right injectors and turbos turned up a bit they should do 150hp?

guess you don't anything too modern or with too many electrics on a boat?

other than those... for 150hp

BMW 2.5 straight six, or the older merc straight six? - those merc straight six engines can do crazy power in stock internals

I am an engineer so quiet a competent fitter but how do I get advice on the right injectors and turbo ,I don't really want to run a development project where I am constantly tinkering / updating the engines are tehre any books or manuals that tell you how to tune an engine and if they are tuned up do they become unreliable I would much rather get them running on land and then fit them.

The weight of a pair of 2.5Di's is enough to cancel out a good few hp!!

all the info is here on this forum,,,, plus they're really easy to work with

get a matching pair of turbo engines, swap to the 130hp injectors

need to make sure you have the bosh fuel pumps (lucas ones are crap, again info on here, everyone does the swap)

and that's it for mechanical stuff

once you're up and running there's 2 fuel screws on the pump, a max fuel screw and a mid range fuel screw... you turn them up till you start getting black smoke and then turn them back a bit

job done, no tinkering needed
