back home but with more troubles

Postby Mac1984 » Sat Sep 29, 2018 8:32 am

Hi all,

After several 1000mls across europe, i have arrived back home.

However, some events happened on the trip. The solenoid wire was the smallest issue.

Next thing was a blown turbo, that a garage replaced. Since then, the engine seems to be getting hot.

The gauge needle usually never moved above the N of the "Normal" print on the Gauge, now its always way above the
Middle of the gauge. Touching the radiator, the one side is ao hot, u can barely touch it, but on the other end, it is still cool, so the radiator is doing its job. Waterpump was done with the timingbelt earlier this year, thermostat is new and confirmed working, the radiator flushed and new coolant in the system.

So can it be something about the turbo itself? I am pretty sure the garage has just fired the turbo in without going to the bother of setting it up properly, then the communication there was not so easy either (far end of poland).

I also think acceleration wise its not as good as with the old turbo, but that again might be just the proper boost setting? Its quite smokey too, but only on the lower end, for example i am accelerating in a higher gear with lower revs, it would be smoking, but on higher revs and speeds it seems fine. They dont seem to have touched the fueling on the bosch pump, as the marking i have made on the max fuel screw is still there.

The temp gauge is not getting to the very top, but still it seems to be getting much hotter then usual. I dont recall the radiator ever being that hot before.

Maybe somebody has similar things happened?

I am always glad for any advice, i try to keep the old van on the road.

No, nothing went out of control as far as i can tell?

I had to top up the oil all right as the turbo spit it into the intake.

Anyone? I am hoping its not the head gasket? Any tips for what to check/how?

Thanks a lot

You say radiator was flushed was the engine also flushed possible air lock somewhere in the system I am only guessing.

I thought the system was self bleeding? Anyway, i have investigated a bit more:

And it seems the o ring in the cap of the coolant tank is perished
.maybe that allows air into the system? I see if i can get a new o ring and then report back.

Picked up a new radiator cap today, and it makes a bit of difference, you get the hissing noise again when you open it again.

But still running hot, only applying full heat keeps the temperature about in the middle of the gauge..

The hoses under the bonnet are super hot. Guess im running out of options here, was driving around for a good while
In the hope ot might bleed an potential airlock out, but no change..

Also ive spotted some tiny bubbles on the dipstick, nothing i have seen before.
.
Must be a very little leak then, since i still dont notice any water getting less?

also i cant spot any oil in the water? Could the bubbles in the oil maybe come from the water/oil cooler thing down in the engine bay?

Im just afraid of throwing a lot of time and money into the headgasket and its maybe aomething else..

Thanks for the input. I have replaced thermostat already..twice..:-)

I just cant think of anything else anymore..

Also, all the hoses of the bogger circuit are getting hot, and the radiator is getting hot also,

Which is think must be an indication of the thermostat opening?

Maybe the gauge acts up also, but i never had a smiley getting hot so quickly and getting as hot as this one..

And i have this one a few years now, never went as hot as this ever before..

But thanks for your help, i check all hoses again...

Cheers

Just arrived home and there was almost no coolant left in the system..now there is steam coming from the
Engine block somewhere...coolant on top the engine also, must have thrown all the water out on higher revs, as in idle it seems ok now...

Looks like a lot of work is lying up ahead...

Are the hoses getting rock hard (due to excess pressure)
Get the headder tank "sniff tested" to rule out combustion gas (head gasket)

has the new waterpump failed internally?
Impeller come loose on the shaft?

Thanks for your reply..

The waterpump must be working, as water is circling in the sytem?

I am honestly at the end. I have heard that head gaskets very rarely give bother on these engines?

Now today:

i arrived with an almost empty cooling reservoir, and only drove about 10 mls maybe..

There is evidence of oil spray on the right, were the battery sits.. On the intake hose and on top of the
Cambelt cover was coolant everywhere, but very brownish looking water.

The steam was coming from right over the exhaust, exactly where the first exhaust attachment bolt sits..
After playing around with the throttle a bit, it seems there is water leaking from underneath the rocker cover seal, but only at higher revs.

Coolant liquid in the tank looks very clean and clear..
I have the impression that the oil on the dipstick looks a bit lighter in colour, there also seem little bubbles at the very tip of the oil dipstick..

I am expecting the worst now :-(
