Mk7 2011 LWB, OBDLink, 8-10mpg?!

Postby LOMAX » Sat Sep 29, 2018 4:31 pm

Hi. I seem to filling up on diesel too often so installed an OBDLink LX to check fuel economy and it's reading 8-10 mpg after driving around town all day!

Is this accurate or have I set it up wrong?

Im assuming 80l tank, 2000kg kerb weight. Not sure how to estimate current fuel % What other variables might I have forgot to input?

It's a Mk7 LWB, 2011, 55k.

Calculating fuel consumption?

Fill the tank, reset the trip mileage, or make a note of the actual mileage.

Drive the van until you think it needs refilling, then take a note of how many litres to fill up to the same level (ideally use the same garage and pump, so that the van is sitting in the same position) and note down how many miles you've covered to use those litres.

Divide the miles covered by the litres used (say 400 miles, 50 litres, = 8 miles per litre.

Multiply by 4.55 to give you MPG. 8 x 4.55 = around 36 (ish) MPG

Was going to say, are you sure your not mixing up Miles per Gallon & Mile per Kilometre?

Thanks for both of your replies.

Does anyone have any experience measuring fuel consumption using an OBD Link type device?

So I did the calculation manually and worked it out to 24 mpg.

This is an even mix of city and motorway driving.

It still seems very low to me.

What can I do to increase my mpg?
