how much more power can I extract from an 80hp

Postby freebee » Mon Oct 01, 2018 11:13 am

I don't know the model number or which transit it came from, but how much more power can I reasonably exspect to gain??? and how would I go about it?

I'd think it would be impossible to say without a lot more info about the engine. As an example, the basic 2.2 engine with a number of different internal components, ancillaries (eg. turbo) and external components (eg. PCM, or injection ECU) came out of the Ford factory with outputs between 85PS and 155PS (the latter in the Mondeo).

Having said that, as another example, it's not really wise to take an 85PS engine up to 110PS without fitting oil cooled pistons.

You'll need to know a bit more about the engine to get any kind of answer.

Wouldn't an 80hp engine be a banana engine?

Probably, yes, weren't most of them 76bhp? I was just highlighting that without knowing more, even a picture that someone could positively identify it from, the question's impossible to answer.

I concur, there is a thread somewhere with pictures of all the different engines but I can't find it, but yes a picture speaks a thousand words :)

That wee fella is a marinised 2.5DI, and is most likely the 80PS version if Normally Aspirated, and 130PS if turbo'd. The best way to check is to cross reference the injector and pump part numbers.

80PS can be 'easily' turbo'd, and if sensibly modded, the standard lump will happily take the extra strain.
