Transit as a donor vehicle for 1937 Ford Pick

Postby AshB » Sat Oct 06, 2018 11:45 am

Hi All, I’m new to the forum but driven transits for 15 plus years. I should also say I’m probably the least technical bloke on the planet.
I have a project to convert a 1937 Ford Pickup from a Ford flat head to a new engine and gearbox we can use daily with a lot of work being around central London. I have. 2006 T350 with the 135 engine which is redundant and I’d love to use it as a donor vehicle. It’s rear wheel drive, has good power and is reasonably economical.

I have a Good Hotrod guy and Car electrician to help me but we see the transits EVU as being a huge hurdle in that we think you have to intergrate the dashboard into the truck which for me is a non starter.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of customisation or any advise on if it’s achievable. I would consider another transit if it’s easier with an earlier model although economy of fuel is a priority.

Thanks again for anything your able to add

The Mk6 135 TDCi engine is known to be quite unreliable and temperamental....

As knobby has said it's a TDCI so not as simple as the TDDI to mess about with electronically.
Maybe look into the landrover world as I know there s been some interesting changes done with them.
But thinking about it I reckon you could easily run a TDDI lump by just getting round the pump ECU module using a raspberry pie or something?

Firstly you need to know if the donor is lez compliant for London, is the LEZ still a thing down there or is it ultra LEZ now?

Any way I could be wrong but I think if using the mk6 135 as a donor you'll need engine loom, pcm, dash loom, clocks (speedo), ignition barrel n key and transducer ring for the imobiliser.

Thanks for the reply guys, the TDDI engine is an option I’ve been thinking about. I’m almost certain that it is a lot simpler electronically and I’ll start exploring it.
The ULEZ shouldn’t be a problem as Historic vehicles are exempt and it is registered as Historic.

If it’s historic why not put 2.5 di turbo with the Bosch pump conversion and MT75 box with the cable speedo drive no fancy electrics and reasonable power
