Towing a loaded trailer with beaver?

Postby Wollys World :) » Wed Feb 13, 2019 8:09 pm

Just what i have been pondering over the last day or so.

What is it like to tow a loaded car transporter trailer with an empty beaver recovery. Is it actually legal first off and then the stability of the rig ?

And wondering as thinking of going self employed recovery/transporter soon.

Depends on what the "train weight" restrictions are....which I understand to be GVM + trailer and it's load.

It may also depend on the 'Max Trailer Weight' stated on the V5.

You're also into "O" license, and tachograph, territory :?

If the vehicle is under 7.5 t `O` licence isnt needed.....is it?

I know about the tacho, needed even if a tow bar is fitted and not used i believe, Pain in the arse but work easy enough.

Yes so say the train weight is 6 ton. So vif a 3.5 ton vehicle is fully loaded and dragging a loaded trailer GW of 2 ton = 5.5ton then less than the train weight if it ok.

So is it ok to use an unloaded 3.5ton GVW beaver tail ( 2ton ) to tow a trailer loaded to a GW of 3.5 ton ?

Just seems heavy to tow that rig.

Don't know for sure, rules are very different here in Aus.

It is certainly not illegal to tow a loaded trailer with a unloaded beavertail vehicle. As mentioned, you need to check your trailer weights and weight it will be once loaded to determine weather you can stay within legal requirements. Personally I have just loaded the trailer and if the tyres are not flat or the tow bar is not on the floor then I'm good to go! But some like to check everything first. Not for me but everyone's different. But no, not illegal to tow it 8)

As long as the gross train weight is within what's specified on your vin plate then you are good to go. Doesn't matter if most weight on trailer or towing vehicle.
What is important is the plated weights of trailer and what load you put on it, just like plated weights on your truck

These weight limits must not be exceeded

GVW of the vehicle - RTA LAW
MAM of the trailer - RTA LAW
GTW for both vehicle+trailer together - RTA LAW
Max towing limit listed on the V5 DVLA keepers doc - C&U REG 100
EX IAM car and commercial observer
