Rear drums stuck after winter

Postby wilbertd » Sat Feb 16, 2019 4:27 pm

It's not the first time this happens: during the winter (it can get real cold over here), if I apply the handbrake when parked, the brakes can get stuck.
A few bangs with a hammer on the drum normally loosens them, but not this time.
Any idea's, might dragging it with my Toyota 4runner help?

Cheers,
Wilbert

don't put the hadbrake on
leave it in gear and chock the wheels if needed,
will it not free off by starting then in gear and try to pull away?

No, they don't come free. I tried reverse and first gear, but that didn't help.
And yeah, normally I try not to use the handbrake, but it is such an habit.

Try taking the wheels off so you can tap all round the drum I once had the hand brake cable seize up and had to cut it close to the back plate and it let the brakes release

Yeah, I was thinking about cutting the cable to. I have been hammering round the drum for quite some time now, but to no result.

Might have been a fluke but jacked up and twated around the wheels with a rubber hammer. dropped down and gave it some beans in reverse and it broke everything free. that was after 3 days standing. recently it was sat for two weeks and moved away no problem, not one smidgen of drag. an enigma that is the ford transit.

Some more hammering and jiggling the cables worked, but then I heard some 'clunck-clunck' noises coming from the back wheels a few days later, at least I was able to drive it to a garage. Time for some new brakes.
