rear wheel play

Postby flidy46 » Wed Jun 19, 2019 7:02 am

Hi all. I've not been on here for a while,my problem is both rear wheels on my transit van have in and out movement the near side is the worst and I can pull the whole wheel in and out about 7mm , it's not what I would say seems like worn wheel bearings from past experience you can wobble the wheel back and forth , like I say this is just straight in and out , if anybody's got any ideas I would be greatful, the van is a 2005 2.4 rwd a d has the axel where to remove the half shafts you need to pull the diff cover of and remove the pin and clip, thanks Gordon

There was a tsb and warranty for this a while back you can do an etis search to see if yours is there but I'll bet that it is no longer available.

But the copper C washers have worn thin and allowing too much play. They need replacing and the half shafts checking. I believe the fix is a cage type box that fits over the clip to stop it from dislodging.

Hi , so you dont think its the bearings then , the copper washers you mention are they the same locking washers that are removed to withdraw the half shaft , I havnt got that far yet I managed to break the diff pin lock bolt but I did get it out but it started raining and hasn't stopped since hopefully I can get another look tomorrow, thanks Gordon

Yes the pin comes out then you take the copper C clip out, it's in a groove with the half shaft fully in and the pin out you can then remove it easily, they wear thin and cause too much play which in the end was dangerous but a new pair of clips and a cage thing to hold them in will sort it.
There will always be a small amount of play maybe upto 5mm

hi again had a little play this morning as I pushed half shaft in to remove c clips there was a clatter and a cog fell out but never mind that will go back , I've looked at some other pics on Google and I've a feeling mine has the cage thing fitted have said that there doesn't seem to be enough room to remove the cage to gain access to the clips for half shaft removal I'll try and take a pic

Yes, I haven't seen 1 in the flesh but I believe that is it. Maybe remove it and measure the thickness of the c clips and also the groove on the half shaft where the clip slots into, then you'll need to find the reference for the max wear /runout.
If when fitted you find too much lateral play and the clips are within tolerance then it must be that the half shafts need replacing with the clips :(

The bearings rarely go and are not tapered type so have no 'bearing' on lateral play afaik.

Besides that if they aren't noisy etc then it won't be that they need replacing.

Take the clip out and remove the half shaft out and take a photo

everything out , the c clips are fairly tight and I wouldn't say theres much room for larger ones , on further investigation ive found out theres shims in different sizes ive googled images them and they are like a coin flat and round but where do they fit the only place I can see is inbetween the end of the half shaft and the diff pin but theres nothing to hold them there ,

No idea sorry :(

I would want the half shaft in rather than out I think.

Can you remove the half shaft and then offer the copper clip into the groove and see what play is there?

hi yes I've done that and there doesn't seem to be any room to get anything bigger in there, the problem looks like it's the gap between the end of the half shaft and the locking pin , it seems a crazy system

Vibration could the propshaft and/or uni joints not happy....are the propshaft support bearings ok..??

The axles have 10 different size shims in the diff to adjust the axle freeplay.
