transit mk8 cluster fail

Postby JIMMMI007 » Fri Sep 06, 2019 2:01 pm

Hi FTF,
I have a 2015 Ford Transit 2.2 tdci L2H2. 103.000 miles
The instrument cluster has stopped working! (Speedo etc.)
No fuel temp or speedo readings
The lights work(not in cluster), indicators and heater all work.
There are no fault codes.
It has one battery.
We have checked all the fuses!
We have taken the cluster off and check the connections!
It was work and suddenly stopped.
We have had no recient repairs or work done on the van!
We have taken the van to an auto electrician and he can't find anything wrong!
Do these models have clusters that fail as a regular fail?
Any ideas?
Thanks
Jim

Anything is possible. Did the auto electrician check for power at the correct pins? Does he have a wiring diagram for the speedo?
The mk7 ones were plug and play so could just be swapped over, the milage needed correcting though, easily done with ids if the replacement set was a lower milage. Mk8 seem to be more intelligent though and may require more programming.
Ford will want big money for a set of new clocks.
It may or may not be the clocks :?

Hi,
thanks for your reply.
There is power to the cluster.
The fuel gauge is working on the cluster, but nothing else.
I am thinking that the cluster is faulty, but have not seen any one else having problems with one!
I believe they are coded to the van, so can't swap one to check.
Just wondered if anyone had come across anything like this, before I send the cluster off for a repair and it's expensive.
As there's power going to the unit, I am leaning towards it being faulty.
Regards
Jim

Hi,
just checked.
It's had one fitted and someones taken it off and cut the wire and taped it up.
No wires are touching.

If it's had a towbar, there's likely a module in the nsf door step, they are prone to water and corrosion.
This generally shorts out and melts the circuit board inside, the can-bus circuit it's on can make the cluster appear dead.
I suggest removing the ns plastic step assy to check, and unplug the module.
There are 3 plastic blanks to carefully prize out then torx bolts under, step should then pull upwards,it may be trapped under edge of front seat but can usually be lifted enough to access module,
(if you look underneath van in same area, you may see towbar loom from rear coming to a grommet in this area through into the step.)
There are only 3 or 4 wires in and out of module, but will short the can lines, most modules I've opened have been close to being on fire, the smell will give it away, green or corroded plugs will also cause same fault.

You super star!
The towbar connector was rusty when we found it.
Once disconnected the van works a treat!
Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all. I have this same problem - replaced both batteries under the drivers seat. I don’t have a tow bar - but my side step does behave strangely. Doesn’t always come out when opening the passenger door - turning on the ignition awakens the step.
Everything functions - starts and drives, wipers/lights/sensors all fine. But the instrument cluster is completely dead.
When removing the instrument cluster fuse and replacing it, the needles jiggle a little as though it’s almost coming to life - but after 3/4 seconds they stop and drop to 0 again.
To be honest I don’t even know where to take this now as auto electricians won’t even come out after I describe the problem.
Any suggestions? Because I’m stuck.

I’ve replied to the other thread you started,as it seems this problem happened after you lengthened the front to rear offside wiring loom.
