Hello Steve,
Just got round to stripping your old Engine, not so good news, one of the cylinder head valve inserts had fallen out !! this caused quite a bit of damage to the head and piston, This happens and there would have been nothing you could have done about it. Please see the attached photos.
Best Regards,
Peter.

It is common for valve & valve seats to fail on LPG engines
Not to derail this thread but valves burning out happens on SOME engines being run on LPG without flashlube or similar. Saying it is common is a bit of urban myth, you've also got to factor in nobody gets an LPG conversion then does 4k a year going to the shops, they are going to be doing high mileages to get their money back, higher mileage more likelyhood of failure due to wear and tear, as things get older converted vehicles get bought by people looking to save money (like me), I very much doubt if anybody ever checks valve clearances as part of routine servicing on an older vehicle when it is specified by the manufacturer then they wonder why it burned a valve with no warning.
Valve seats dropping out isn't common although I have heard of it happening several over the last few years, all on pinto powered transits, I guess the probably aren't that many Pintos left that get worked hard, if the same failure happened in a track day vehicle or kit car you would just put it down to one of those things.
