Steering sticks when first moving wheel???

Postby FritzZeus » Fri Nov 22, 2019 11:21 pm

Hi
My issue is when I first move my steering wheel from stationary the steering sticks, but I usually put it on full lock left and right as I drive away and it rights itself, has anyone else had this with their Mk7 or have any clue what it might be?
Thanks
Stephen

Yesi do, I've had it for two years it's more noticeable in the winter, done several flushes of fluid and only marginally better, pump change made no difference so going to change the rack, but I can't be arsed removing it so the one I'm replacing it with comes with a complete van

Well, that’s a bit extreme lol. My steering sticks first thing when I move off, sorts itself out fairly quickly but this morning it felt like I was trying to turn a bloody juggernaut

Indeed a bit extreme but hey ho I'm not known for my mediocre efforts

I find turning left first is harder than turning right.
But if you leave the wheels turned to one side a bit when you stop at night then it turns fine in the morning.

Now then I had this problem, stiff and squeaky in the morning, just fitted 2 new ball joints and track for ends, nice light steering for a couple of weeks 8) steering is super heavy now but that's a different reason

Try changing fluid again but change more this time , empty the reservoir and fill, start enginge long enough for new fluid to pump into system then drain and refill and repeat until its all new fluid. Comma power steering fluid and conditioner worked well with mine a while back, also like Nedo said could be a fooked ball joint or two, could be worn tyres , may need belt change or crank pulley on way out , does it sound like a budgie stuck under bonnet at tickover???????Image
