3rd brake light requirement

Postby MIREZ » Sun Jan 05, 2020 3:52 pm

Afternoon all, happy new year and all that.

Can someone tell me the legalities of a third brake light? Got some damage to the rear door and have the opportunity to get a cheap door but it's not got the third light in it.

However, my van has a lightbar fitted to it so I have two more brake lights up on the roof. Given that, do I need a third brake light when it comes to MoT time or will they suffice?

Testable if fitted, if not fitted, it can't be tested

I believe the Mk7 has them and the Mk6 does not.....doors should fit otherwise...

But as Punto says, they can't test for them if not fitted. Not sure of the rules in the UK....

Here in Aus, if they were fitted on that model at the factory, they must have them and must work.

My mk6 has a 3rd brake light

It used to be if 3 are fitted 2 must be working not sure if it's changed but as already said if it ain't there it can't be tested.

Bought it tonight for £20 so not gonna break the bank if I get a knob of a tester else I'll just give 'em the old 'no idea' line.

Thanks for the replies

I would imagine it would be pretty easy to modify the Mk6 door (without high-level stop light) and fit the brake light and door sub-loom from the damaged door. But, as you already have a high-level stop light on the roof bar I doubt there will be anything in the tester's notes to say exactly where the lamp should be.
