2nd gear crunches above 1000rpm

Postby nietzscheismycopilot » Tue Jan 21, 2020 2:22 pm

I have a 2007 fwd 2.2 mk7 Transit. 2nd gear crunches unless I change below 1000prm. Was hoping for a bit of help diagnosing before I take it to a garage. It's just had the crankshaft seal on the gearbox side replaced, so I was thinking it could be transmission fluid, or the cable, or is this something more serious like worn gears or synchromesh?

Is it doing it cold and hot?

Always worth trying the cheap options first,

Cable adjust.
Fluid change.
Selector bearing lube.

After that at least you've ruled out the obvious, then you can start looking at the more expensive options, box and clutch

Every van I've owned in the last 20 years has done this, probably because they were all high milers, but pausing in neutral for a second, to let the revs die down, always gets around the crunching. Also, don't keep it in first for too long

1997 Mk5 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (Gone, but not forgotten!)

Clutch works ok, does it cold and hot. 150,000 miles on the clock it's just this problem started a few days ago and I wanted a bit of help with diagnosis. Letting the revs die right down before switching or starting in second is how I've been getting round the problem, but it looks like it needs a new box.
