2003 mk6 350 lwb rwd stiff 1st/2nd gear help

Postby Bigchilli » Tue Mar 10, 2020 2:06 pm

Hi folks
I have an 03 350 lwb rwd
1st and 2nd gear can be difficult to select
Better when cold
With only the ignition on they seem to work fine up and down all gears
My 1st thought was cables, spoke to few garages they said my model doesn't have cables?
Ive read loads of threads and watched a few YouTube videos but mine looks different to others ive seen
Any help or suggestions would be great
Thanks

Your garage is right, the RWD Mk6 doesn't have cables, only the FWD does.

Is the clutch feeling ok..??

Hi
Not too sure what i would be looking for tbh
It feeks ok to me but I've never experienced a bad clutch im aware of

Problem seems to be intermittent

With ignition on gears go in smoothly
I will say i can pull away in 2nd gear easily
I can also hear a slight whirring sound that lessens when clutch pedal is pressed

Ok so i done a few quick tests on the clutch

Driving in 3rd,dropping to 2nd=revs shot up immediately
Handbrake on in 3rd,lifting clutch quickly=van immediately stalled
Simulating hill start in 2nd,handbrake on=van stalled
Handbrake on 3rd gear, rev to 3000rpm then release clutch=revs dropped and van stalled no instantly though??
Accelerating on the road in 4th and 5th van revs match rise in speed ok

This last one has me concerned
Van in 3rd,handbrake off, slowly release clutch(no pressure on accelerator) van began to move about a foot then spluttered and stalled

Any thoughts?

Clutch sounds normal but....is the pedal close to the floor when it takes up..?? Or closer to the top..??

Thnx for the reply
I just went out and checked
I would say its pretty much in the middle, maybe slightly closer to the floor when it starts to bite

When i was driving this afternoon(raining)stopped at a roundabout
Pulled away in 1st,then when i went into 2nd it almost seemed like it wheelspun slightly for a split second
Didn't floor it
Never had that before but thought it might be relevant

Update
Van is booked into the garage on Monday
Was hoping to get some ideas beforehand so i don't get shafted

Done a couple of tip runs(couple miles) the last couple of days
Van drove fine, all gears going in fine
Problem definitely worse when the van is warmed up
Its definitely seems intermittent aswell

Symptoms could be caused by a bad spigot bearing, they tend to get worse when warm.
