2.4 cylinder balance

Postby Paulscarbs » Sun Apr 05, 2020 6:07 pm

Question for those more knowledgeable than I.

Is the cylinder balance something to be concerned about?

If so, do I need to enable a relearn?

Thanks

Cyl #2 doesn't look real happy.....have you done an injector leak-off test to see if it's not well..?? Desired vs actual fuel pressure seems good-ish.

MAF actual vs demanded seems a bit strange....but we don't know the rpm etc...

The Transit runs well with plenty of torque. I only ran this as I was enabling Cruise Control. When I saw these readings it made me wonder whether something wasn't right. Yes, injector 2 seems odd.

RPM is about 800. No throttle.

How do I run an injector leak test? You mention it seems ok.

You pointed out the MAF reading seems strange.

What should healthy readings be for all of these?

TIA

Leak-off test is fairly easy, just do a search on here and there'll be plenty of info. I mentioned the desired vs actual fuel pressure looks ok, unrelated to the leak-off test.

Normally the desired and actual readings would be similar, much like your fuel rail pressure is....but there are more knowledgeable chaps on here than I who may know for sure.

I'm awaiting parts to complete the leak off test but thought I'd video the engine running for anybody else to try and ascertain whether there are unwanted noises coming from the engine.

By and large I think it runs well.

Towards the end of the video there is evidence of a distinct 'pinking' style noise. This is evident if stood in front of the vehicle but not really on the video (until the end section).

Might this be the over fuelled cylinder?

Often with common rail diesels, the "pilot" injection is responsible for lower rpm diesel knock etc...The pilot injection is a tiny "pre injection" prior to the main fuel injection, this helps to soften the hit as the fuel is injected. You'll notice older diesels are quite noisy compared to the newer common rail machines as they don't have this "pilot" injection.

Mine is very quiet for a diesel when warm, when cold it does have a slight diesel knock....but it is a diesel engine after all is said and done.

In theory, if the learns are done successfully, it should run fine and be relatively quiet.

I belive the learns should be a normal service function...not just when problems arise.

Great. The learns were done this time last year so it's timely.

Still leaves me with the problem of needing to learn how to do them though.

Get yourself an ELM-327 and Forscan....it's easy after that.

I have, that's how I know one of the cylinders is overfilling (above).

Just don't know how to go about the procedure.

It's In service functions...once you enable it, it walks you through it...pretty simple really.
