Engine swap

Postby Qldmts » Mon May 18, 2020 4:19 am

I have a mk6 H9FA 2.4 TDCi common rail engine in my ford transit.
The engine is sad and I have another that is out of a wreck with low KLM's.
If I swap the engines is there any issues I need to know about with the computer like injector numbers needing to be put into it or will it just go as it is.
I do not have the car the new engine came from only the engine itself.

You will need to code in the injectors then do a pump and pilot learn then reset the counters values to make it run efficiently and smooth.
But it should run without doing anything initially as long as the fuel is bled well and the timing and sensors are ok.

If you just swap the basic engine and keep all the original accessories, it should be fine. If not...do what Airthies said..!

Ok thanks for that but today I found out the engine I have is not the same, it is a Duratorq V184 90PS (sticker on the timing chain cover) Looks exactly the same as the motor I have but this one is not common rail. I have the ECU for this engine but I also have another 115Hp engine that is no good and ECU and I am not sure which ECU goes with which,
Basically I don't care about the drop in power as the car is not used on the highway, I just want to get it going if I can using the 90Hp motor.
Can I put this engine in and its ECU once I know which one it is and make this go. It looks like the wiring loom in the car itself is the same and it is just the loom on the engine that plugs into the car loom and then swap out the ECU and maybe it will go.
If anyone has done swaps and they would be most likley going from a 90Hp up to something higher let me know what drama you had.

Can be done but you'll need to change just about everything, ECU, engine loom, dash loom depending if it's pre or post digi dash.

There's also a lot of differences between the TDDi and TDCi engines.

Does the 90ps TDDi come with all it's accessories, fuel pump, injectors, manifolds, turbo etc...??

Yes it has everything, I am just not sure which ECU is the one for it. It has its wiring loom, pump, turbo etc.
I was told the wiring loom in the car would be ok and I could plug the engine loom into it and the ECU and it should run but that seems to easy.

Another thought would be to change the pump, injectors from the H9FA onto the 90hp as the engine is the same it seems, I am told there is just an oil gallery to unplug and place the pipe from the H9FA into it so the pump gets oiled. This also seems to easy as I would have thought cams may be different and the head might be but looking at both engines side by side they look the same except for the difference in the common rail and pump of course.

I am not sure which 90 hp motor it is as there are 3 types D2FA, D2FB & HEFA, how do you tell the difference?

I'll have to do some checking, if the injectors are different that would be the first dead giveaway, I was reading a post where someone had changed over a DOFA, I think it was, but it never told if he succeeded in the end. That was where I saw the comment about the oil hole under the pump.

The injectors are indeed different, TDDi are mechanical, TDCi are electronic.

Yes but will the electronic injectors go into the head of the 90hp motor without fouling the pistons and if I change all the common rail stuff over will it run. Basically turning a 90hp into a common rail. Everything looks like it will bolt straight on. If this works then no ECU swapping etc is needed.
That the job for today to see if this can be done.

Thread is near 4 years old and he hasn't been back on here since April of 2021...so I suspect we'll never know.
