Mk7 loss of power

Postby JakeJames » Tue Sep 08, 2020 6:29 pm

Hi, Yesterday I drove from Southampton to Carlisle and at about halfway up the M6 I could smell a horrible burnt rubber smell. I thought maybe one of the belts had snapped, but they were fine. I did notice a fresh deposit of black gunk covering the turbo and just assumed that something had got on it, got very hot and created the smell. Forward to today and I’ve just been for a drive in Carlisle and I get a loss of power. I pull over and the wet patch of gunk on the turbo is bigger, fresher and wetter looking. Now, a few years ago the EGR needed replacing and most recently it had another issue with lack of power which turned out to be one of the injector pipes had been worn through by a badly fitted air intake and was leaking.
My question is, if the turbo is getting covered in gunk, do you think it’s the injector pipes leaking again causing the lack of power? It seems to tick over ok and run at low revs with no real problem, just not well enough to get back to Southampton!

Edit - sorry, pic is upside down for some reason! :?

Edit 2 - or is it a leaky knackered turbo?

Does she blow blue smoke out the exhaust at all..?? Pop the intake hose off the turbo and see if there's a silly amount oil in there, also check the movement of the impeller, does it spin freely, movement up/down, forward and back....a "tiny" amount of movement is ok. Check the two injector clamp bolts to see if they're loose/broken.

The big air inlet hose connected to the turbo in your pic....the big oily dirty one, just undo the clamp and pull it off to check the impeller etc...

Another stupid question before I start pulling things apart tomorrow.... I assume the injector bolts are underneath the air intake?

Ummm before I continue, is this a Euro-4 or Euro-5?? 2011 was the changeover year...

If Euro-4, only the FWD has the engine intake cover thingy, RWD's don't have this, on the top of the engine between the injectors, there's a "twin fork" clamp holding down two injectors with a bolt in the middle....see #9C344 & #9362 here:

And check the actuator rod too I suspect.....Having said that, it should be a Euro-4 with that turbo on it...don't the Euro-5's have a VNT..??

Just thought I would check the oil level before I start pulling things apart as I’ve read somewhere that to higher level of oil can get sucked up into the turbo. The oil level is just above the maximum level, top of the plastic, just short of the metal part of the dipstick. Is this a problem?

I’m on holiday, so tools are limited.

Update - I’ve pulled the air intake off and I can see no issues with anything on top of the engine, injectors bolts etc. See pic

I took off the main pipe leading from the air intake to the turbo and checked for oil inside the pipe. Nothing inside the pipe

I took off the small pipe as per andz327 and I can’t see any issues. It doesn’t appear to be blocked, but I can’t get it off completely to check.

Didn’t know what an actuator rod is or where to find it.

I managed to get my fingers down into the turbo and the impeller feels good. It spins ok and I couldn’t feel any wear

No blue smoke from the exhaust, or any other colour. Just a very small amount of normal exhaust fumes

Maybe important, but the van only revs to 3,000 now.

Check the hose from cooler to turbo. Under that plastic intake and turbo. I had the band snapped and it took air between the hose and cooler.
Doesnt help with the grease on turbo, but I had loss of power and revs because of it.

Interesting. Where abouts is this hose? Can you see it in any of the pics?

The long hose to intercooler. Just behind the bumper. Upper part goes to turbo.

Doesnt show in any of your pics. But you will find it leaving under the turbo and going to intercooler.

Sorry if any misspelling etc. English is not my native language
