how to set timing 05/2000 td from scratch

hi first post
have 05/2000 turbo diesel and lost the timing have tried several times but am now self doubting ,if im setting timing from crank and cam first ,i have it lined up so all 3 pins fit each cam and can rotate crank with belt back on and it lines up after several rotations ,but im unsure if my cam although turning smoothly is firing at no 1 ,when lined no1 piston rockers are loose but no 4 are tight ,some of the articles ive read say u can remove rocker arms make sure valves are shut and reset from there,how does that work ,i turned crank and cam to get setting i have now turning each a little as sometimes it would stick so would gently move crank in reverse till cam turned so now im worried even though it turns, is cam at 1 or out in space any help gretaly appreciated in to deep to give up

Does the crank pin go right through the hole in the flywheel? there is only one hole that goes right through, but there is a recess that the pin could drop into.
When you have it so the pin can go right through the flywheel the rockers for No 1 piston (front) will be loose (valves closed)
Turn and watch the rockers for No 1 until the inlet valve opens and closes but before the exhaust valve opens this is tdc on the compression stroke

thanks mate think my timing is sorted still wont start have bleed system several times and can only get a cough when using easystart ,have gone back to anything fuel ive touched,loooking for air holes found dial on top of fuel filter does anyone know what that is for only turns a fraction with an arrow indicator,should i even be checking there as all injectors squirt when bleeding,thinking have i dropped crank angle sensor or is a code reset needed and where is stop soliniod on lucas epic pump any info appreciated been a few weeks other real mechanics have had a quick look to no joy,i first started by fixing seals in pump maybe back there is problem stumped

DO NOT PUT 12V TO THE STOP SOLENOID - THAT CAN KILL A LUCAS EPIC PUMP

If its not firing on easy start, fuelling isn't the issue - that leaves timing or compression.

Are you 100% sure you haven't pinned the crankshaft 180 degress out? As stated it is possible, I have had engines where the pukka timing pins dropped in the wrong hole in the flywheel before

hi thanks for reply ,hey i was there last weekend thinking my crank to cam may be in reverse and took rocker of and wound it around not quite convinced onwhat i as seeing so will double check in morning ,so i can have it 180 and the crank to cam wont clash , as i have felt it clash prior when trying to get timing by hand to where im at now ,so i could have managed 180 believe it or not might b good news as i feel my fuel line is ok used to start straight away

oh is it 2 turns of the cam to 1 of crank or 4 ta

The crank turns twice for every turn of the camshaft

Hi 2crank one can or the other way round crank seems way bigger than can

to clarify
Crank pulley is half the size of camshaft and injection pump pulleys so the crank has two revolutions for one of cam and pump

ok thanks so if i pin holes i have, and to check if im 180 out ,i should c the fuel pump locating hole travel around twice as im hand turning crank?i filmed the crank hole the other day and cam locator went past several times ,there were heaps of holes but most other 13mm sizes looked like they were out of compression stoke and last position 13mm in crank and other cams all fitted snug,so today to find 180 on crank and check rockers as advised i was just looking at how many times to watch fuel pump pass as to know im 180 for sure

Again....there is only one hole in the flywheel that the 13mm pin goes right through, and the cam and pump have their own recessed locating holes, once all are pinned correctly its timed correctly,

yep all pins are in and front two rockers are able to moove;
so after that where do u suggest, when i bleed system i used pressure to the pump then turned over to bleed injectors,it used to start prior to doing the seals even when pump was starting to leak pretty bad, does this model have a code that needs clearing,could the fuel pump be 180 by anychance it seems that would be difficult as cog pretty much guides locating hole to top,crank angle sensor i did bump it,have a pcar scan tool borrowed but no transit van on it,no mobile mechanic in area so on my own ,have had around 15 diesels, but this one all sounds pretty doable as i have read heaps of forums and utubes has got me probably tell by the posts bloody lost ,

And again... I have had at least 2 vans where the crank pinned 180 degrees out after cambelt failure - and yes, that was using a proper timing pin.

You are only looking at half a turn of the injection pump and camshaft for 1 full crankshaft revolution
