Hydraulic Pipes - sealing compound

Postby UK-Mk6- 35TD-Tranny » Thu Sep 17, 2020 2:28 pm

Hi all :) I have to replace some of the Hydraulic pipes on the power steering lines, devils own job getting the originals off, had a sealing compound in all the joints and PTFE tape like stuff in the pump joint, can somebody please advise what sealing compound to use on the new ones please. I have seen on YouTube somebody use 'Loctite' red, but nothing definitive, the original is white and bloody hard work to get rid of!
PS. Still having big problems getting all the parts here in france for a UK RHD van and getting them from the UK, well, the postage/shipping cost on ebay are through the roof, cost almost, in some cases, more than the item. Again, thanks for the help :D

Loctite 567 would be my weapon of choice. But most steering pipes are only sealed with an 'O'ring rather than sealant, but never had a transit one off yet so can't confirm or deny the use of it from factory

If your talking about the high pressure pipe from pump then doesn't matter what you put on the threads thats not what leaks, it's a special nut that your torque up then the pipe pushes in to the nut, its the nut that has seals and special clip inside it and it the seals inside the nut that leaks Image

If your not fitting a new pipe it's bit of a job to get the old nut off the pipe without damaging the pipe, DREMMEL metal cutting discs and cut down 2 sides to split nut in half

No ANDZ I have to get a new pipe as the 20 years old original was badly corroded and a bugger to get off the old rack. Just found out that my Mk 6 had a number of modifications done to the steering/suspension by Fords so finding the correct parts is becoming a bit of a nightmare, but I will get there, just going to take me longer and more dosh! Thanks again :)
