Brakes go hard and soft

Postby DTH84 » Tue Nov 03, 2020 6:49 pm

Hello,

Recently when driving on the motorway my brakes when rock hard. They still worked but we’re extreme stuff. Five minutes later I went to dab them and they sunk straight to the floor. Again they still worked but we’re very soft. The front left wheel was making a squeaking sound when I was driving.

I went and had the callipers on the front left changed and they were ok briefly but again they would go extremely stiff and it was hard to get the van over 60mph and then they would go soft again and the van would drive fine.

Could it be the other calliper has gone or is it something else?

My garage seem pretty confused by it.

Cheers,
Dan

If the garage is "confused"...take it to another garage...

Pedal going hard would possibly suggest the vacuum pump may be dying, or it's line to the servo has a leak, servo itself not happy. Are you losing any brake fluid..?? Fluid level ok..??

Thanks for your reply.

The fluids are fine and there isn’t any indication of a leak.

When I turn the engine on, I can feel the hydro kick in on the brake pedal.

It feels like something is locking or getting stuck in the wheel.

There's also been some vans with brake flex lines breaking down inside and causing a "one way" valve of sorts...worth checking out at least. If the brake flex lines have been there for a long time it might be worth replacing them anyway.
